In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to Mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds
Some songs never seem to get old. Some conflicts never seem to end. The ghosts of a year ago have taken their place alongside the ghosts of the Nakba and Sabra and Shatila, their bloody chorus bolstered daily by new arrivals from Gaza and the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.
On Saturday, hundreds turned out in Waterfront Park in downtown Louisville for a rally as part of the International Day of Action for Palestine. Organized by a coalition of local groups, people from all over Kentucky filled the Great Lawn to call for an end to the genocide, oppression, and occupation. And of course, for a #FreePalestine.
We were there not because of religion, but because we live in a world where there's a formula for determining the 'acceptable' number of innocent lives to be snuffed out in attempting to kill someone.
A world in which colonialism, apartheid, and collective punishment is alive and thriving. A world in which there's money for war but not for disaster relief.
For two hours the Great Lawn was filled with chants, speeches, and even a poem by a Lebanese exchange student whose family is under IDF bombardment back in Lebanon. Local media appeared to be in attendance but coverage of the event has been curiously absent.
Could say more but y'all know the score. Will leave you with a verse from Macklemore (rest of the song here) and one last photo.
We don't own the earth, don't own the earth
We're killing each other over some lines in the dirt
We bleed the same blood, feel the same hurt
Palestinian life, does it have the same worth?
What happened to us?
