Colour photographs present more "neutral" approaches to our surroundings, like a more objective portrait of reality. Black & white photographs, on the other hand, aim to highlight the essence of reality.

Philosopher Vilém Flusser addressed this issue in his "Philosophy of the black box: Essays for a future philosophy of photography". For Flusser, reality is colourful. Black and white are just abstractions detached from practical life: "Black and white photographs are the magic of theoretical, conceptual thought, and it is precisely in this that their fascination lies. They reveal the beauty of abstract conceptual thought. Many photographers prefer to shoot in black and white because they show the true meaning of photographic symbols: the universe of concepts."

O preto e o branco são apenas abstrações descoladas da vida prática: “As fotografias preto e branco são a magia do pensamento teórico, conceitual, e é precisamente nisso que reside seu fascínio. Revelam a beleza do pensamento conceitual abstrato. Muitos fotógrafos preferem fotografar em preto e branco porque tais fotografias mostram o verdadeiro significado dos símbolos fotográficos: o universo dos conceitos”.
