This is my submission for the #monomad challenge
Intro
This past winter I took a trip down to central Alberta, Canada to visit an old friend. Like minded and both lovers of film we decided to meet at a park to shoot some film while we walked.
The following were all shot on a Mamiya 645 with either the 55mm f2.8 or a 150mm f3.5 lens, on Kodak TriX400 120mm film. Some images were pushed to 800iso speed. This will be pt. 3 of 3 successive posts intended to share the images with discussion, while reducing overall length of the posts.
Pt.3 - Trees
Part 3 is why I took these shots. For the trees. For the last two years I've been desperate to get back to Albert to photograph a mix of the poplar and aspen trees. Growing up with forests of these trees nearby I didn't realize how much I missed them until I moved away. The small clusters of them are so unique and wonderful. These clusters are what drew me to this image. The way these trees are growing so close together I find so curious.
Although I wish I had composed this slightly differently, I really like this shot. The four poplar trees are so much brighter than the surrounding bush they stand out in a wonderful way. Theres great tonal range throughout and because of the poplars theres a clear and obvious subject.
This scene was so cool and I am a bit dissappointed it didn't turn out. This cluster of trees was all by itself, lit brightly by the sun and was the shot I was most excited to see developed. I thought it would be absolutely stunning with the harsh contrast and well lit trees. Unfortunately, it seems I underexposed it too much. And because of the way film underexposes this shot has almost no data in the shadows. Its so dark in the shadows that even if I faded the shadows I wouldn't be able to save this image - at least, not in my opinion
This scene would have benefitted from some atmosphere. Some fog, or heavy snow. Something to obscure the background. I loved the way these trees specifically twisted all over, with them all abnormally spaced. It seemed like a cool and wicked area to photograph, but I'll have to retry it another day.
I don't really have much to say about this one... I just thought it was a cool scene with an intense density of trees. I like how it turned out overall. Its just good haha
This was one of the images I was most excited for from the day. Sitting there I begged my buddy to let me borrow his tripod so I could slow the shutter and increase my aperture. I was hoping those front 3 trees would just pop out in a trifecta style pattern. I liked the way they sloped up to the right and the small coniferous trees surrounding. I sitll like it, it just didn't end up being my favorite
This is by far my favorite image of the day. I realize compared to others its not as impressive in some ways, but for me there is a huge amount of peace in this image. Soft light, a woodland landscape. It just resonates with me.
I hope you've enjoyed all three parts of this little film showcase from my long walk weeks ago. I shot 2 full rolls of film here, and these were my favorite picks, along with some bloopers from the outting.
