Today, I had the sweetest little girl as my guest, adorned with a beautiful hair clip. I was eager to capture some lovely photos of her. The backdrop we chose was a charming little girl's room, complete with a chandelier, a vanity mirror, and a window with delicate curtains. Let's call our model Elena. Elena is simply exquisite, with long flowing hair and a graceful stature. I asked her to sit exactly where the chair would be centered in the frame.
First, I want to mention that photographing in front of a mirror and setting up the lighting comes with its own set of rules. We had to be mindful of not being in the frame, ensuring that the reflection of the light we were using didn't cause any glare or reflections in the mirror, and making sure that the reflected light and its shadows didn't create too harsh contrasts, especially since we were photographing a child. Fortunately, my walls were light and smooth, so I didn't need a reflector to soften the shadows from my key light.
Two of the photos I took were full-length shots. After that, I started experimenting with different angles and poses for little Elena. She had such an innocent gaze, sometimes with a gentle smile and other times with a serene look as she gazed into the mirror and around her. Our vanity was light in color, complementing Elena's outfit and contrasting beautifully with her hair color and the background reflected in the mirror. I particularly loved the photo of Elena tilting her head, looking at herself in the mirror. There was something so heartwarming about that image, seeing a little girl gazing at herself with such affection.
I continued the shoot with various compositions, trying to let Elena be herself and simply asking her to change poses. Luckily, my setup was stable enough that I didn't need to adjust the lighting after setting it up. One important tip for lighting is to position your subject at a 45-degree angle to the main light, or key light, for optimal illumination.
I absolutely adore photographing children, but I also enjoy couples photography. Newborn photography, on the other hand, requires an immense amount of patience, though I do it from time to time because I truly love my job and have a maternal instinct towards all my little models.
I hope that this photoshoot was as fulfilling for Elena's mother and Elena herself as it was for me. I would love to hear your thoughts. I hope you have a wonderful day filled with many happy moments.
