The city hall of Leiden (The Netherlands) is a beautiful building that was constructed in 1596. The building exudes history!
Perfect for a post for the #monomad challenge.
Unfortunately the big stone staircase in front of the building was in the shade, but the rest of the building was in the light.
On each side of the stairs there is a statue of a small boy leaning on a hourglass. I've asked ChatGPT what the meaning of this symbol is and the answer was that is means the passage of time and mortality.
The building is decorated into the smallest details. Something a lot of people don't notice is the rainwater drainage. Next to the drainage pipe is a face of a woman.
Statues of lions are often used in old buildings. The shield that the lion is holding has the symbol of the city on it: two keys. They resemble the keys of Saint Peter, the patron saint of the city.
Above one of the entries there is a large text.
It translates to: "Unless the word of God grows, one builds in vain."
This is derived from Psalm 127:1, emphasizing that all human efforts are futile without divine blessing.
