Taking shots

Taking Shots-

I've not had the chance to properly sit down and write anything on here in a bit. Life has been a bit messy recently, but I have been reading in that time, usually over coffee in the morning.

Not for the first time since joining I've been mightily impressed by the photography on here.

Photography is a skill I've always admired, and wanted to learn, even as far back as high school where the aloof seniors that wore doc martins and flannel shirts would disappear during lunch hour to develop their films in the dark room.

I've had several small encounters with photography in my life and was lucky enough to have a little insight into the world through a close family friend, but my only real takeaway from his knowledge was a limited understanding of basic lighting and how to control it in a room.

But I've never really picked up a camera to try it seriously.

I don't own a fancy camera, but I am the proud owner of a brand new phone which apparently has a really good camera. A redmi pro 10, I don't know much about phones or their technical specifications, so it all means very little to me when I read it.

My old Huawei finally got too bashed up to be much use, the battery had expanded backwards breaking the back case, and an accident with a faulty protective case smashed the screen to smithereens. So a new one was a must.

Anyway, back to the point. I've got this fancy new phone, with an apparently fancy camera. The camera roll was empty, and it looked rather sad like that.

I literally had thousands of photos on my old phone. So I figured, with a little bit of inspiration from hive that I should give it a shot, see if I can start to take nice pictures not just holiday snaps or family photos, you know, maybe improve by experimentation.

I'd really been taken back by the black and white pictures and their impact so that is what I've tried, and found it a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I don't really understand the technical side or know my iso from my shutter speed other than a general vague idea of the functions, which I actually learnt here from the posts by @bil.prag so thanks for that!

But now I've tried, I have taken that first dip into photo taking.

So here goes, I've been gently nudged towards drafting this post by you know who. Its nice to know that he thinks it's good enough to share.

My attempt at photography. I hope you enjoyed the images.

Hopefully there will be more to come.

glad i could help.

i like the first one. stairs are interesting but it is hard to do it with a phone in lower light situation.

that frame is also nice. interesting b&w

Thank you! I really found your posts about the functions of the camera settings and lighting informative, more so than what I've read in the past, and I really appreciate the feedback.

I must admit I am curious about how one should handle a scenario like the stairs? I couldn't seem to get it light enough, but still wanted it to remain moody.

the moodiness would probably be done in the post processing. the thing i see there is motion blur (i think) and on auto settings that usually happens when there is no enough light so the shutter speed is just to low to be hand held.

Ok thanks for the explanation. I've been trying not to use auto. No point trying to learn something if you don't try to do it yourself. I guess I needed a higher iso/lower shutter speed or the inverse, or maybe a tripod 😅?

higher iso and lower shutter speed but to the point where you are happy with noise for iso and where you don't have blur from your hands moving :D

or maybe a tripod, then you have no problems with hands moving :D

You should be very proud of this talent. I am sure @rubido is... damn... so great people with so many skills. We need to boost this up.

This reminds me I need to ask for a new phone =)

Damn right, shes got the talent so I figured I'd force her into it 😁

Thanks! It's true there are just so many talented people, it's inspiring to be a part of this community! Good luck with the phone! Check out the Xiaomi's, im glad I did!

Yeah, it's very easy for a recent tech to completely overcome the very old expensive ones. =)

Very well done! I'm always impressed by the quality of photos from cell phones. I love your first shot, depth and meaning in that one was well captured. The first shot with cobwebs really caught my eye, it has a beautiful abstract quality that appeals to me on a personal level. The same with your last shot; window with the cobwebs is a gorgeous shot.

You actually picked two of my personal favourites, the spiderweb and the lovers under the sign! The cameras on phones these days really do seem impressive now don't they. You prompted me down memory lane a little, I had a Nokia 3310, one of thos indestructible cells, I remember the photos I took with it being really a bit grim. A big contrast into today's technology for sure.
Thank you!

Oh yes, it's changed so much. I like how you see, based on your photos. Keep exploring. Looking forward to seeing more!

Well done @iaura, this is awesome and I wanted more pictures! Just keep up the good work here on HIVE!

Ok @edprivat! There will be more, promise. 😅 im gonna do my best to keep to a quality standard. And thank you I really appreciate your support.

You have a great sense of composition!

Gosh, that's such a compliment, I'm honoured. I'm glad you enjoyed the post. Thank you

I think you should keep taking pictures. I like to make my images talk. Like instead of me actually saying bastard cops or something to that extent and potentially pissing someone off who supports bastard cops, I might just:

I'm regularly attracted to signs. They literally speak like wtf does that even mean??

img_3262.heic

I plan to do so. I've got to try find my style but I think that will develop in due time if I nurture it. I hear you about an image speaking. I hope to find my voice.

Signs can be fun can't they. I'm sure one day @rubido will do a post about some of the town names we've come across. How do you keep a straight face when directing someone to a town called Pinas? Becareful of those changeable wagons!
