I think that half of my friends, half of my family, half of my ex-colleagues and half of the town's population; have left the country... And that is easy to check, just look at my contacts on my cell phone or on my social networks to discover how they are all scattered around the world... I could have imagined anything for the future, but this exodus took me by surprise, I must confess... That's why when someone writes to me and asks me: “Are you still in Venezuela?" I always answer "I'm still here"... Then, behind that answer is a long list of questions that go from knowing if I need “help to exit” to those who simply ask: “Why are you still there?" My answers are usually according to each one, because I don't like to hurt feelings or seem petulant, but the truth is simply: “I'm still here” and it is very possible that this will never change despite the increasing difficulties...

Creo que la mitad de mis amigos, la mitad de mi familia, la mitad de mis ex-compañeros de trabajo y la mitad de la población de este pueblo; se han marchado fuera del país... Y eso es fácil comprobarlo, basta con mirar mis contactos en el móvil o en mis redes sociales para descubrir como todos están esparcidos por el mundo... Hubiese podido imaginar cualquier cosa para el futuro, pero este éxodo me tomó por sorpresa, lo confieso... Es por eso que cuando alguien me escribe y me pregunta: ¿Y tu sigues en Venezuela? yo siempre contesto "Sigo aquí"... Entones detrás de esa respuesta es común el devenir de una larga lista de preguntas que van desde saber si necesito "ayuda para salir" hasta los que simplemente preguntan: ¿Porqué sigues allí?... Mis respuestas suelen ser acordes a cada quien, pues no me gusta herir sentimientos ni parecer petulante, pero lo cierto es que simplemente: "Sigo aquí" y es muy posible que eso jamás cambie a pesar de las dificultades cada vez mayores...

The reasons for “still being here” are diverse and I think I would need a lot of time to write them... But after all these years living in a very “minimalist” way, I think I can come to the conclusion that I “lived too fast”... In my 20's I was already graduated, married with a son and working in a corporation... By my 40's I was pretty tired of it all. I'm talking about the schedule, the meetings, the travel, the investments, the social commitments, the projects, the partners, the routine, the doctors, the credit cards, the car, the house, the vices... Everything, absolutely everything made me feel prisoner, strangled, suffocated!... The story is long, but it ended with me “taking pictures in the streets of the town where I have always lived”... I like that... Maybe that's why “I'm still here”, I don't know... ;)

Las razones para "seguir aquí" son diversas y creo que necesitaría mucho tiempo para escribirlas... Pero después de todos estos años viviendo de manera muy "minimalista", yo creo que puedo llegar a la conclusión de que "viví muy rápido"... A mis 20 años ya estaba graduado, casado con un hijo y trabajando en una corporación... Alrededor de mis 40 años ya estaba bastante cansado de todo aquello. Hablo del horario, las reuniones, los viajes, las inversiones, los compromisos sociales, los proyectos, los socios, la rutina, los médicos, las tarjetas de crédito, el auto, la casa, los vicios... ¡Todo, absolutamente todo me hizo sentir preso, ahogado, asfixiado!... La historia es larga, pero terminó conmigo "haciendo fotos en las calles del pueblo en donde siempre he vivido"... Eso me gusta... Quizás es por eso que "Sigo aquí", no sé... ;)
