Hello monochromatic #Hive friends!... Welcome to a new edition of my black and white photography series for our dear @monochromes team's #monomad challenge! Today I have to share with you twenty (Yes twenty!) shots made on the flowers of one of my mother's favourite plants called: ‘Jasmine of the grand duke of Tuscany’ What an ostentatious name! hahaha :))....

¡Hola amigos monocromáticos de #Hive!... Bienvenidos a una nueva edición de mis series de fotografía en blanco y negro para el reto #monomad de nuestro querido equipo @monochromes. Hoy tengo para compartir con ustedes veinte (¡Sí veinte!) fotografías de las flores de una de las plantas favoritas de mi madre llamada: "Jasmín del gran duque de la Toscana" ¡Vaya un nombre ostentoso! hahaha :))...

I took these pictures this morning in my mother's garden. Last night we suffered a heavy thunderstorm with rain, thunder and lightning which lashed our valley. So today's morning was cloudy and wet, so instead of going out to exercise and take pictures, I spent my time preparing breakfast at home. My mother's house is right next to ours and their backyards communicate with each other through a couple of doors, so I made enough breakfast to give to my mother as well, along with a hot coffee. No sooner had I reached my mother's garden than I smelled the unmistakable and exquisite scent of jasmine flowers... It's an exquisite aroma that makes you think about poetry!

Estas fotografías las hice hoy en la mañana en el jardín de mi madre. Anoche sufrimos una fuerte tormenta con lluvia, truenos y rayos los cuales azotaron nuestro valle. Así que la mañana de hoy estuvo nublada y húmeda, así que en lugar de salir a ejercitarme y hacer fotografías, me dediqué a preparar el desayuno en casa. La casa de mi madre está justo al lado de la nuestra y sus patios se comunican entre sí por un par de puertas, así que hice suficiente desayuno para llevar también a mi madre junto con un café caliente. Apenas al llegar al jardín de mi madre percibí el inconfundible y exquisito aroma de las flores de jasmín.... ¡Es un aroma exquisito que hace pensar en poesías!.

I said good morning to my mother, served her breakfast at the table and told her: ‘Mum, your jasmines are in bloom and their fragrance fills everything out there...’. My mother immediately confirmed what I had said and began to remember and say that these plants have always been linked to our family. I particularly remember seeing them in my maternal grandmother's garden and I also heard from her lips that both my great-grandmother and my great-great-grandmother grew these same plants so that they could enjoy the scent of their flowers during the rainy months.

Dí los buenos días a mi madre, le serví su desayuno en la mesa y le dije: "Mamá, tus jasmines están en floración y su aroma inunda todo allí afuera"... De inmediato mi madre me confirmó lo que yo había dicho y comenzó a recordar y a decir que esas plantas siempre han estado ligadas a nuestra familia. Yo particularmente recuerdo haberlas visto en el jardín de mi abuela materna y también oí decir de sus labios que tanto mi bisabuela como mi tatarabuela cultivaban esas mismas plantas para poder disfrutar del perfume de sus flores durante los meses de lluvia.

I quickly returned to my house to get my camera and went back to my mother's garden, where I took pictures of these lovely flowers and enjoyed their perfume while I was scrutinising each flower looking for the best angle to take the pictures. My mother watched me through the dining room window while eating breakfast and talked about her memories as a child when she used to make little clusters of these flowers to place in her room and perfume it. These little flowers offer a myriad of shapes from when they are simple blooms to when they open their petals; even when they fade they take on a kind of ‘transparency’ to their petals and make them look like glass, which is especially beautiful when they are sprinkled with raindrops...

Rápidamente fui a buscar mi cámara en mi casa y volví al jardín de mi madre, allí me dediqué a hacer fotos de estas encantadoras flores y a disfrutar su perfume mientas escrutaba cada flor buscando el mejor ángulo para hacer las fotos. Mi madre me observaba a través de la ventana del comedor mientras desayuna y hablaba de sus recuerdos de niña cuando solía hacer pequeños mazos con estas flores para colocarlas en su habitación y perfumarla. Estas pequeñas flores ofrecen gran cantidad de formas desde que son simples botones hasta que abren sus pétalos; incluso al marchitarse adoptan una especie de "transparencia" en sus pétalos y las hace parecer de cristal, lo cual es especialmente hermoso cuando están salpicadas con gotas de agua de lluvia...

I decided to do a little research on the internet for this flower species and can confirm that this is a variety of the ‘Arabian Jasmine’ (Jasminum sambac) which originates from the Philippines... This made me understand why people here call the varieties with single flowers (few petals) only ‘Arabian Jasmine’... Everything seems to match!

Decidí hacer una pequeña investigación en internet para esta especie floral y puede confirmar que esta es una variedad de el "Jasmín Árabe" (Jasminum sambac) cuyo origen es Las Filipinas... Esto me hizo entender porqué las personas aquí llaman a las variedades con flores sencillas (de pocos pétalos) solamente así "Jasmín Árabe"... ¡Todo parece concordar!.

As you can see through these photos, the visual possibilities of a plant of this species in bloom are enormous. Today I spent almost an hour and a half walking around my mother's plants and only stopped taking pictures when again began to rain. If the rain had not come, I might have stayed much longer taking these photos and enjoying the exquisite bouquet of these flowers... It's a delightful way to make macros, man! :)

Como pueden observar a través de estas fotos, las posibilidades visuales de una planta de esta especie en floración son enormes. Hoy estuve casi hora y media dando vueltas alrededor de las plantas de mi madre y solo paré de hacer fotos cuando comenzó a llover nuevamente. Si la lluvia no hubiese llegado, quizás hubiese permanecido mucho más tiempo haciendo estas fotos y disfrutando el exquisito aroma de estas flores... ¡Es una manera deliciosa de hacer macros caray! :)

I took these photos using my 100mm macro lens, so even though it was a cloudy and humid day, I was able to take advantage of the light characteristics of this lens and get the most out of this photo session in my mother's garden... Besides: I love visual drama!... So I didn't take pictures like for a botanical magazine, but used large apertures (from f/7 to f/4) together with high ISO from 640 to 1000 to have images with crazy out of focus backgrounds and some grain to ‘romanticize’ the visual plane... Long live black and white, man! ;)

Hice estas fotos usando mi lente macro de 100 mm, así que aún a pesar de ser un día nublado y húmedo, pude aprovechar las características luminosas de este objetivo y sacar el mayor provecho posible de esta sesión de fotos en el jardín de mi madre.... Además ¡amo el drama visual!... Así que no hice fotos como para una revista de botánica, sino que usé grandes aperturas del diafragma (desde f/7 has f/4) junto con ISO altos de 640 a 1000 para tener imágenes con fondos locamente desenfocados y algo de grano para "romantizar" la el plano visual... ¡Que viva el blanco y negro caray!. ;)

These plants can be twined around walls or wire fences, but my mother prefers to ‘plait’ their branches into bushes that can grow up to 3 metres high. She also prunes them annually to obtain a plant growth more in line with her expectations. My mother usually propagates these plants by cuttings and she says that the ones she has in her gardens are directly descended from plants that her grandmothers had.... Wow, here in my village everything seems to have a good story to tell! ;)

Estas plantas pueden enredarse en paredes o alambradas, pero mi madre prefiere hacer una especie de "trenzado" con sus ramas y así darles forma de arbustos que pueden sobrepasar los 3 metros de alto. Además les poda anualmente para obtener un crecimiento vegetal más acorde a sus expectativas. Mi madre suele propagar estas plantas a través de esquejes y ella dice que las que tiene en sus jardines descienden directamente de plantas que tuvieron sus abuelas... Vaya ¡Aquí en mi pueblo todo parece tener una buena historia para contar! ;)

They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.}
