The next random days in Rhodes! #Monomad challenge

Souvenir shop

I have no idea if this post will be muted now, but hopefully very traditional art & history will be fine! 😀

No, I never checked this street out haha...

I guess this is the modern follow up! Most of Rhodes seemed quite sleepy, but I guess there would be alternatives for those who seek that out!

Along one of the main streets going to the beach

Actually there were several dilapidated buildings, I guess Rhodes have seen better days? My impression was that perhaps even most were returning regularly, many have apartments there, and its not the "newest" or most exiting thing any longer...

Ruin along the beach

Before leaving I spent a few weeks with an old friend of mine who actually started visiting in the late sixties. Back then there was not even a real police force on the island!

Even this building that now is a real ruin might not have existed back then, and if it did it was certainly used in a sensible way since it is right along the main road by the beach...

Who knows how this tiny city that relies on tourists will look in a decade or two?

Old Vespa parked by a bar

I actually stopped here to ask the owner if he knew where I could rent an old motorbike. Even asked him if I could rent this one, he thought I was joking haha!

The first thing I would do here if I planned to settle for a while would be to get something old & cheap like this, being mobile is everything...

Old, small fishing boats

These have probably been a vital part of feeding thousands of tourists through the years!

I actually had a fun chat with a guy dressed as a pirate, who owned or commanded a sailboat for hire, about how to loaf around Greece in any old boat. It can be done, I would even not hesitate getting a hull like this fixed in a week or soo, done that before 😀

Of course the motors have seized and so on... But he did agree that getting a tiny sailboat could work for staying out at the islands for a long summer, without paperwork and astronomical costs.

The old fortress & a cruise ship

The next couple of posts will be about the old fortress which of course is, and was a main feature of Rhodes since way back when, and then the ferry going all the way to Athens.

I really had a good time, and would definitely return, but the cost is quite astronomical... Maybe a workshop there in a couple of years could work, or maybe things will change simply because they have to with time...

Oh, and from the wife of a restaurant owner I got a good tip for peaceful, very frugal living: go to the mountainous North of Greece, get a couple of sheep to feed you, they will also keep you warm in the winter!

Who knows, I think I could be happy sleeping between a couple of sheep friends for a winter haha...

That's it for now! #monomad
