Creative Portraits at Night - My entry to monomad challenge

Hello friends!
If there's one thing we like here, it's the use of objects that can make our photography more creative. Our photographer Nicolas Carreiro has spent years of his life making and selling handmade kaleidoscopes and has always had in mind to manufacture one for use in cameras.

Already working as a professional photographer, this idea was still fed up in his mind. After several studies, involving kaleidoscope diameter, width and length of mirrors, our first prototype was ready and it was time to go test the results.
The photos below are from the first test at an evening event in the neighborhood, in the year 2017. In addition to the common difficulties in low-light photography, the kaleidoscope in front of the lens absorbs some of the light and makes the image even darker. However, the result is really satisfactory, allowing a search for angles that bring reflections and add elements to the composition in addition to creating an automatic guide, taking the viewer's eye directly to the subject in the center of the image.

For those who don't know what a kaleidoscope is, it is a cylindrical object with three mirrors on the inside forming a triangle. When the images are leaning against the end of the mirror, it will form a symmetrical image called the mandala, but when we move away from the subject the mirrors tend to form a mess of reflections with the elements that would be outside the field of operation of the lens. When using a kaleidoscope to photograph, you can take advantage of the mirrors to form an accurate and psychedelic frame or you can find symmetries in the reflections.

Either way, it is an excellent exercise in creativity.

The last photo in this post uses the double exposure technique on the camera, without the use of a kaleidoscope, and will be the topic covered in our next publication. We will still talk more about the use of the kaleidoscope in a future publication, but in the next with the use of colors.
We hope you like the content and keep following us here.
