MONOMAD: Meusuejid Raya

in Black And White3 years ago

The house of worship's architecture was created of concrete as a replacement for the previously burned timber structure, which was known as the Grand Mosque at the time, or Groote Moskee or Missigit Raya in Dutch. It was constructed in 1879 by the Dutch East Indies government, under the direction of Governor of Aceh Karel van der Heijden.

Quoting from a 1915 book published in Dutch the Leiden University Library collection is released digitally via Delpher.nl.

The building is now known as the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, and it has become a landmark in Banda Aceh City. We call it Meusuejid Raya.
