Monomad - Archutecture in Zagreb

in Black And White14 hours ago

Hello and welcome back to all Hive friends and black and white photography lovers. For today's theme, I chose some architectural photos from the city of Zagreb. Unlike some European cities where old and new structures jostle for dominance, Zagreb’s older architecture still holds court, exuding an old-world grandeur that refuses to be overshadowed. However, Zagreb has experienced two stronger earthquakes, which have left their mark on the architecture. The first one was in 1880, with an estimated magnitude of 6.3. It caused severe damage to many buildings, including the Zagreb Cathedral, which had to be extensively rebuilt, leading to its current Neo-Gothic appearance. And the second one, not so long ago, had a 5.5 magnitude in 2020. For this reason, there are many buildings in the middle of being repaired. So my conclusion is, I will return to Zagreb again when some of those beautiful buildings are rebuilt.

Quick fix for the earthquake damage.

I like this building, where today is the "HŽ Infrastruktura", the company responsible for managing Croatia's railway infrastructure. Constructed in 1903, this edifice originally functioned as the head office for the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV), reflecting its historical significance in the region's railway development. Architecturally, the building is a quintessential example of early 20th-century masonry structures prevalent in Zagreb's historic center. What a beauty.

just across the street, you can see the Esplanade Hotel. The Esplanade Hotel in Zagreb is one of the city's most iconic buildings, known for its elegant Art Deco architecture. Built in 1925 to accommodate passengers of the famous Orient Express, the hotel exudes early 20th-century luxury with its grand façade, intricate detailing, and opulent interiors.

For the next one, I have a real treat with an interesting history. This is the Art Pavilion (Umjetnički paviljon) in Zagreb is one of the city's most distinguished cultural and architectural landmarks. Built in 1898, it is the oldest exhibition hall in Southeast Europe designed specifically for large art exhibitions.

The building is a stunning example of the Viennese Secession (Art Nouveau) style, with a striking yellow façade, elegant domed roof, and intricate decorative elements. Originally constructed for the Millennium Exhibition in Budapest (1896), its iron framework was later transported to Zagreb, where it was reassembled in its current location on King Tomislav Square.

Speaking of culture, the next building is the Croatian National Theatre (Hrvatsko narodno kazalište). It is one of the city's most magnificent architectural and cultural landmarks. Opened in 1895, this grand building was designed by famous Austrian architects Fellner & Helmer, who were known for their work on theaters across Central Europe. Outstanding!

Now let's finish with one I don't have a clue what it is or where I took a picture. If anyone is from Zagreb, let me know if you recognize this beauty. Would love to know and share with you more info about it.

Beautiful architecture. I hope you can find someone to tell you what that building is. Very nice pictures, by the way. 📷
