You need to have a very good sense of composition to take a picture in vertical orientation.
Nowadays I rarely take vertical photos, but sometimes the vertical photo is the only good choice, because the things would not fit into the picture otherwise. This also depends on the optic angle of the camera. I taking photos with my smartphone (nowadays a Samsung Galaxy A12). This has a normal (1x zoom) and wider (0.50x zoom), but sometimes the things still do not fit into the picture in horizontal photo mode, so I have to take vertical photos in those cases.
