John chapter 3:1-8,
describes a night-time conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council.
Nicodemus acknowledges Jesus as a teacher from God due to the miraculous signs he performs. Jesus tells Nicodemus that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.
When Jesus says, The kingdom of God refers to the realm where God reigns supreme, both in the present spiritual sense and the future physical sense. It includes eternal life and a restored relationship with God.
Unless they are born again, the term born again can also be translated as born from above, indicating that this new birth is a divine act initiated by God.
It is the work of the Holy Spirit.It is the work of the Holy Spirit who regenerates and renews a person's heart and spirit.
Transformation of identity:
This rebirth changes a person's identity from being of the flesh to being of the spirit. It involves a complete transformation, making one a new creation in Christ.
2Corinthians chapter 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.The old has gone. The new has come.
This new identity is characterized by new desires, values and a new direction in life oriented towards God.
Repentance and faith:
To be born again, a person must repent of their sins and place their faith in Jesus Christ. Repentance involves turning away from sin and turning towards God. While faith involves trusting in Jesus' sacrificial death and resurrection for salvation.
The role of the Holy Spirit
Conviction of sin:
The Holy Spirit convicts individuals of their sins, leading them to recognize their need for forgiveness and a Savior.
Regeneration:
The Holy Spirit regenerates a person, giving them a new spiritual life. This regeneration is often described as a being born of the Spirit.
John 3:6
Indwelling presence. Once a person is born again, the Holy Spirit dwells within them, guiding, teaching and empowering them to live according to God's will.
John chapter 14 :16
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.
