Drawing Near to God.

James 4 verse 8

Come near to God and He will come near to you.

The desire for a deeper relationship with God is at the heart of every believer's journey.

James 4 verse 8 presents both a command and a promise. When we take the step to draw near to God, He responds by coming closer to us.

But what does it mean to draw near to God?

And how can we experience His presence more fully in our daily lives?

This verse teaches us that nearness to God is not a passive experience but an intentional pursuit.

Today we will explore what it means to seek God, the obstacles that keep us distant, and the blessings that come when we walk closely with Him.

How do we draw near to God?

Drawing near to God involves several key spiritual practices.

Through prayer. Prayer is our direct line of communication with God. When we spend time in prayer, we invite God into our hearts and align our thoughts with His will. The more we pray, the more we develop intimacy with Him.

Philippians 4 verses 6-7 reminds us to bring everything to God in prayer, and in return, He gives us His peace. Through repentance and holiness.

James 4 verse 8 continues by saying,
Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. True closeness with God requires a repentant heart.

Sin separates us from God, Isaiah 59 verse 2,

But when we confess and turn from sin,
we remove barriers that hinder our relationship with Him.

Through worship and thanksgiving.

Psalm 100 verse 4 instructs us to enter His gates with thanksgiving and
His courts with praise.

Worship shifts our focus from worldly distractions to God's presence. When we cultivate an attitude of gratitude and reverence, we draw near to Him with a sincere heart.

Through the Word of God.

God reveals Himself through Scripture. Meditating on His Word, studying the Bible, and applying His teachings help us grow spiritually.

Psalm 119 verse 105 says,
Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Obstacles that keep us from drawing near to God. While God desires a close relationship with us, some hindrances can keep us distant.

Unrepentant sin. Sin hardens our hearts and makes it difficult to approach God. When we hold onto sin instead of confessing and seeking forgiveness,
we create distance between ourselves and God.

Worldly distractions. In today's fast-paced world, many things compete for our attention. Work, entertainment, social media, and material possessions. If we are not careful, these distractions can push God to the margins of our lives.

Doubt and unbelief. Sometimes our own doubts and fears hinder us from drawing close to God.

Hebrews 11 verse 6 states that without faith, it is impossible to please God. We must trust that He is present and desires a relationship with us.

The blessings of drawing near to God. When we take steps toward God, He responds by drawing near to us.
This comes with incredible blessings.

His presence and peace

When we are close to God, we experience His peace even amid difficulties.

Philippians 4 verse 7 speaks of the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, spiritual strength and guidance. God provides wisdom and direction for our lives.

Proverbs 3 verses 5 to 6 reminds us to trust in Him, and He will make our paths straight.

Joy and fulfillment.

Psalm 16 verse 11 declares,
In your presence, there is fullness of joy.
True joy comes from knowing God and walking closely with Him.

James 4 verse 8 is a powerful invitation from God. If we seek Him, He will respond by coming closer to us.

This requires effort on our part through prayer, repentance, worship, and studying His Word. While obstacles may arise, we must be intentional in prioritizing our relationship with Him.

When we draw near to God,

He fills our lives with His presence, peace, and joy. Today, let us decide to seek Him wholeheartedly, trusting in His promise that He will meet us where we are.
