Why is baptism important?
Baptism is more than just a ritual. It's a profound symbol of a believer's faith in Jesus Christ and an essential step in the journey of spiritual transformation.
Baptism is a symbol of faith in Christ. Baptism is an outward expression of an inner conviction. When a person chooses to be baptized, they publicly declare their faith in Jesus Christ. It's like wearing a jersey to show which team you're on.
Imagine walking into a stadium where everyone is wearing the same color shirt.
You instantly know which team they belong to. In the same way, baptism is a public declaration that you belong to Christ.
In Mark 16 verse 16, Jesus says,
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
This verse shows us that baptism is tied to belief. It's a confirmation of what's already happened inside the heart of a believer. The death of the old self and resurrection into new life.
Baptism also symbolizes the death of the old self. Just as Jesus died and was buried, a believer in Christ goes through a spiritual death when they are baptized.
This is where the water of baptism becomes significant. When a person is submerged in water, it symbolizes the burial of the old self, the old life filled with sin. Then, as the believer is raised from the water, it represents the resurrection of a new life in Christ.
A new life filled with hope, forgiveness, and grace.
The Apostle Paul captures this idea beautifully in Romans 6 verse 4, which says,
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
Baptism, in this sense, is the powerful image of being born again, a fresh start in Christ. Baptism and the new identity in Christ. When a person is baptized, they are symbolically putting on a new life, a new identity.
Think of a person who changes their name after getting married. They are still the same person but their identity has shifted, and they are now associated with a new life, a new beginning.
Likewise, baptism signifies the believer's transition into a new identity, one rooted in Christ.
In the second book of Corinthians chapter 5 verse 17, it says,
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone. A new life has begun.
Through baptism, the believer is spiritually claiming this new life in Christ, a life marked by growth, forgiveness, and relationship with God.
Baptism is much more than a tradition. It's an essential act of faith that symbolizes the death of the old self and the resurrection into a new life in Christ.
It is a public declaration of faith, a powerful spiritual transformation, and a sign of the believer's new identity in Christ.
