Although he is known worldwide as Ibn Battuta, his real name is Sheikh Abu Abdullah Muhammad. He is at once a tourist, a judge, a thinker, and a theologian following the Maliki school of Sunni Islam.

Ibn Battuta set out on a world tour at the age of 20. After that he traveled around the world for 30 years continuously. During this time he traveled 120,000 kilometers. At that time he traveled to all the Muslim empires of the world and met the rulers of those regions.

When Ibn Battuta returned to his home country of Morocco after this long journey, Sultan Abu Inan of Morocco begged him to record a travelogue. The poet Ibn Jozaiya was hired as an assistant to record his entire travelogue. In 1355 his travelogue was published in the form of an article.

The article in his travelogue is called 'Rihla'. It was a historical document of the Muslim empires of Central and South Asia before the 14th century.

The book was translated into English in 1958 and has since been gradually translated into various languages. The full name of this book written in Arabic is 'Tuhfatun-Nujjar fi Garaibil Amsar wa Azaibil Asfar'.

From the historical account of Ibn Battuta comes out the living, political and geographical conditions of the people of those regions at that time. Similarly, from his account we can know about the life and political structure of the people of Bengal at that time.
