Come aveva fatto a mettersi in quel guaio!
Improvvisamente G iniziò a ridere lasciandola a bocca aperta.

Gideon, or rather G, had greeted Maribel as if they were friends united by something she didn't understand. Every now and then she gave him glances to see what kind of guy he was while, with shortness of breath, she tried to keep up with the man who walked rapidly through the halls.
Forgive me for not giving you a tour of the house and taking you straight to the translation room, G said as he opened the door to a secluded room in a wing of the basement, I think you have a lot of questions and curiosities, but before I introduce you to the association, I think it's appropriate to see if you're the right person for the job.
A shadow of terror painted itself on Maribel's face, that wasn't a real job then, but an interview to join a secret association! How had she gotten herself into such trouble!
Please Maribel, have a seat while I go get some tea, then over a hot drink I will explain everything. He smiled and left her alone inside that room.
The first thing she did when G closed the door was to look around and analyze the room. It was windowless with a restful light and a desk in a put with a table lamp and two chairs. The walls were entirely covered with books and, as if someone was pushing her, Maribel approached the shelves to try to understand the topics covered by those volumes. As she moved away from the door the books seemed to get older and older. After a few printed volumes with trivial color covers, there were hand-bound books, and on the wall opposite the door were a few handwritten volumes.
They were written in different languages, from the most modern such as English and French, to oriental ones such as Indian and Chinese and even some in Arabic. The manuscripts were mostly in Latin and, Maribel, imagined that she had been called to translate those.
She didn't have any gloves so she didn't have the courage to take one from the bookcase and browse through it, they were very old books and definitely of great value. While, open-mouthed, she was observing that marvel, she noticed an open book on the desk and went closer to observe it better. From a first glance it seems a medieval manuscript, the decorations were very simple, but well cared for. Nearby some cloth gloves seemed to invite her to wear them.
She took off her coat and put it on a chair, tied her hair and put on her faithful glasses. She turned on the light, put on the gloves and began to read the manuscript. Every now and then he took some notes on a sheet of paper found on the desk.
It told the story of an English noble family, the Lord was a lonely man, he left the management of his estate to his wife and second son. Whoever wanted to talk to him could meet him only at night and the same fate seemed to be reserved for his firstborn daughter. In the village it was rumored that he had been cursed by a witch and for this reason the Father Abbot of the Abbey nearby, had sent his vicar to visit him to find out more about the matter.
I see you have discovered the kind of work that will be required of you. The tone of G's voice sounded amused, but Maribel snapped to her feet in embarrassment. She quickly untied her hair, removed her glasses and resumed her own clothes from the chair.
So..Sorry, I didn't mean to pry, but... she looked at the book on the table the drawings were so beautiful that I wanted to look at them better and then... I couldn't stop reading. He sighed lowering his head. I'm in trouble I guess, I guess I won't get that job now.
Suddenly G started laughing leaving her speechless.
