In battles in Splinterlands, having higher level cards will not always guarantee you victory and the most important thing will be the strategy you will use in battles.
I am currently playing in the Diamond 3 league in the Wild format and I am using cards of level from the Gold league. Today I had a battle against an opponent who used his cards at maximum level and I thought it would be an inevitable defeat, but I was wrong and the course of the battle changed because my strategy was superior and one of the big stars was the summoner Quix the Devious who applied debuffs to the attack on most of my opponent's monsters.
Link to the Battle
As you can see, my opponent has almost all of his cards at maximum level, only the Molten Ash Golem is not, but at this level it is not a problem because he already has all the abilities and the difference between him and the maximum level is minimal.
There are 3 rules in battle: Briar Patch, Weak Magic, and Are You Not Entertained.
Briar Patch - In this rule, all monsters will receive the Thorns ability (the Thorns ability causes monsters with melee attacks to receive 2 physical damage when they attack a monster with the Thorns ability).
Weak Magic - In this rule, magical attacks must first destroy the monster's armor to cause damage to its health.
Are You Not Entertained - In this rule, players will be able to use 1 monster from the gladiator edition.
My choice of Summoner for this battle was Quix the Devious and the reason I chose him was because of the Briar Patch rule, as it is a rule that gives a disadvantage to monsters with melee attacks, so I figured that my opponent would use few or no monsters with melee attacks so as not to be at a disadvantage, so my focus would be to give debuffs to monsters with ranged attacks or magic attacks and Quix the Devious would be a great choice since he would decrease the ranged attack of my opponent's monsters by -1, in addition to that he will also decrease their speed by -1 and this makes him even better because it increases the chances of my monsters attacking first.
Choosing Quix the Devious as a summoner was the right choice because most of my opponent's monsters have ranged attacks and this debuff that I applied to him will make a huge difference in this battle.
Since there is a Weak Magic rule in the battle, I selected Venari Wavesmith, he is a monster with magic attack that has the ability Protect and with this ability he will increase the armor of my monsters by +2 while he is in battle. Now all my monsters have a strong defense that will be useful against all types of attacks.
I always try to avoid using monsters with melee attacks when there is the Briar Patch rule in battle, but I thought that Diemonshark and Tide Biter would be good choices since Diemonshark has a lot of Life and Armor, so he won't be defeated easily, and Tide Biter has the Reflection Shield ability that makes him immune to damage from the Thorns ability, so these 2 monsters will be a good defense for my Frontline.
To help Diemonshark in battle, I selected Merdaali Guardian, she has the Tank Heal ability that will heal Diemonshark for 1/3 of his maximum life 1x per round and the Repair ability that will restore 2 of Diemonshark's armor 1x per round.
Naga Assassin and Igor Darkspear have ranged attacks, so they won't be affected by the Thorns ability. Naga Assassin has a high chance of dodging attacks and when she dodges she will cause 2 physical damage to the monster that missed the attack. Igor Darkspear doesn't have great speed but he has the ability Stun which gives him a 50% chance of applying Stun to the monster he hits. When the monster is Stunned he won't be able to do anything for 1 round.
Despite having a good strategy I really thought this battle would be a defeat because my opponent's monsters seemed better, but I have to learn to trust my skills more and after a few rounds I realized that I had made the right choice and emerged victorious from this battle.
