Intimacy is essential in romantic relationships but it also plays a key role in other kinds of relationship such as with friends, family, colleagues etc. Intimacy is got from a latin word 'intimus' and it means 'innermost'. Intimacy is needed for all healthy relationship to thrive, however they operate on different levels.

Well, you may think about only physical intimacy the moment you began reading the post but there are other types of intimacy and they are just as important as well. Physical intimacy is mostly linked with sex but simple acts like hug or holding of hands also count as physical intimacy. While sex is crucial in relationships, physical intimacy can also be demonstrated through cuddling, kissing, holding of hands. These small act of physical intimacy may seem routine or normal but they can help you to build more affection with your partner.
Emotional intimacy is another key form of intimacy that is needed in relationships. It simply has to do with being able to express your feelings with another person especially the deepest ones. People who go through these type of intimacy tend to have a safe space to share their feelings and they are rest assured that they will be heard and understood. An example of this type of intimacy is when you talk to someone about a difficult situation you are faced with at work and they proffered workable solutions to you.
It is quite easy to establish emotional intimacy if you trust your partner to pay attention to your needs by listening and reacting to what you have said in a positive manner. However, there may be a break in the intimacy if one of the parties involved does not meet the emotional needs of the other.
Another type of intimacy is intellectual intimacy. It has to do with being able to share opinions and thoughts with another person. There's that one friend, acquaintance or colleague that you enjoy sharing ideas with or discussing about a particular subject matter with even if you don't always agree. But the fact that you rub minds together and consider each other's views builds an intimacy that you always look forward to.
Spiritual Intimacy is a common form of intimacy in a relationship. It is when people in a relationship share similar religious beliefs and practices. It may also have to do with sharing beliefs and views that has to do with overall well-being. It is really necessary to share this type of intimacy with your partner.
Intimacy in relationships are in grades and it is often affected by different factors. An intimacy that has been firm can begin to die down when it is not well catered for and one that is fading off can wax stronger when it is well nourished. Some of the factors that can affect intimacy include having a rough time with your partner that is dominated by feelings of anger and lack of trust. Other factors may include going through a stressful event at work or in the family.
It may take some time to build intimacy especially if it's a new relationship. So, take your time and understand your relationship to be able to get the best out of your partner.
