Will my country, Nigeria, get better? This is a very big question that will be going through the minds of so many Nigerians. It is 2025, and things are thrice as bad and hard.
Everything has tripled in price, and it is so frustrating because the current administration is not even doing anything to make things better. More than 50 percent of Nigerians can’t even afford a proper meal two times daily because of how pricey things have become, and they are not even earning as much as they spend. The current minimum wage is not even enough to feed a family of two for two weeks.
This is very sad. Since the beginning of this week everyone has been ranting on social media and the government hasn’t said anything about it till now. How do they want people to survive? How do they want people to achieve their goals? I know everything is not bed of roses in other countries but, one thing I’m sure of is that it is way better than what we are dealing with in Nigeria. The economy is so bad in Nigeria as the system. We don’t even have a good system. The healthcare sector is not as good as the economy.
I saw a man who said he is juggling two jobs together and he still can’t afford to feed his family very well because of how the economy is. To cook a proper pot of soup with proteins you have to have like 15 thousand Naira.
I mentioned earlier that the current administration hasn’t said anything about all of this and to some extent, I don’t think it is their fault. I said I don’t think it is their fault because some of the people in my country are the ones adding to this problem. When people come out to complain instead of them to support the motion, they keep bashing them and insulting them that why are they complaining.
Something happened earlier this week. A lady who is a corps member came out on social media to talk about how the amount being paid to them by the government can’t even buy proper foodstuffs like beverages, a crate of eggs and so on that can last a month. And the most shocking thing I saw was that they based this lady as a corper why would she be buying a crate of eggs that is too much? I was really surprised and it made me realize that the most basic things and food items are seen as luxuries for some people in Nigeria. Why on earth will people say an adult buying a crate of eggs to stock her house is too much?
The most basic things in other countries are seen as luxuries here and that’s why the government doesn’t care and they don’t take us seriously. I don’t even want to start talking about how bad everything has become. My prayer is that God should just help us all.
To be honest, this is a difficult reality to face, but change won't happen overnight. The government needs to be held accountable, but citizens also have a responsibility to actively engage in creating a better future. We can't afford to be used to suffering. It is time to demand better and work together to build a Nigeria that provides for its people and ensures a brighter future for all.
To be honest I don’t think things will change anytime soon. It has always been from bad to worse but, I just pray and hope God does something about this.
Thanks for your time.
