Let’s give a brief introduction to this small nation:
El Salvador is a small dollarized economy with a population of 6.3 million, closely linked to the United States through trade. Between 2000 and 2023, the gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an average annual rate of 2.1%. Over the same period, the official poverty rate decreased by 14 percentage points.
El Salvador faces challenges such as economic stagnation, low levels of investment, and inequality in income distribution.
Recently, the government lifted the ban on metal mining, initially imposed in 2017 to protect the country’s water resources, in order to stimulate the economy and attract foreign investment.
El Salvador became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021, alongside the US dollar. President Nayib Bukele promoted this initiative with the aim of generating jobs and promoting financial inclusion.
However, Bitcoin adoption has encountered several challenges. Despite the government's efforts, the use of the cryptocurrency has remained limited among the population. As of 2024, only 8.1% of Salvadorans used the Chivo Wallet digital wallet.
In December 2024, the Salvadoran government reached an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a $1.4 billion loan. As part of the agreement, El Salvador agreed to make the acceptance of Bitcoin in the private sector voluntary, not to use BTC for tax payments, and to limit the participation of the public sector in Bitcoin-related activities.
Despite these changes, the Bukele administration has indicated its intention to continue purchasing Bitcoin to bolster national reserves.
