The group saw its beginnings in 1989, when young William Adams, better known as Will.i.am and Allan Pineda known as apl.de.ap met in Los Angeles when they were in eighth grade. William was born on March 15, 1975 in Los Angeles, California and Allan was born on November 28, 1974 in the Philippines, at age 14 he was adopted by an American couple and moved to Los Angeles. The two became instant friends and discovered a mutual interest in dancing, especially street dancing, and singing, and joined a break-dancing group called Tribal Nation.
Back then, William went by the name Will 1X. After high school, they formed their own group, Atban Klann. The Atban part of the name stood for A Tribe Beyond a Nation, and was a nod of respect to their initial group Tribal Nation. They were both determined to be successful, even though many of their childhood friends who had been involved in music had quit music to go into drug dealing. But this was something the duo refused to do. They stayed away from drugs, and instead of giving up when they didn’t achieve instant success, they followed their dreams with a vengeance.

The first single from the album, “Don’t Phunk with My Heart”, was a hit, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Don't Lie", was the second single from the album, was successful on the Hot 100, peaking at number 14, although it was not as successful as the first. With this song the group earned their third Grammy Award.
