Higher Hive Prices Brings Bigger Temptations

in Olio di Balena14 hours ago

I saw a milestone post a few days ago from someone who had just reached 8 years on the chain and wanted to celebrate. He had some good pending rewards, but then he got a downvote from someone who probably disagreed with the incoming rewards.

It was not too much considering the size of the pending rewards, but it would have been excessive for a post worth $10 to $15. I am not sure if it was a 100% DV, but seeing a DV in a milestone post was unbelievable.

Now, I am not sure what the history of the DV is; perhaps the owner incurred the DV as a result of previous actions, but it demonstrates that DV can be personal rather than caused by something a person created.

However, this is not a post about downvotes

The preface in the previous paragraph only discusses power and responsibility. Power, whether earned or not, can be intoxicating. People who own or possess power have worked for it, while others simply wield power that has been delegated to them.

Power, whether truly owned or delegated, has an equal impact on a person. Most people with a lot of power are unaware of how much it controls them. They sometimes believe they are in charge, but in reality, they act directly based on their level of power.

It is not uncommon for people to become obsessed with power, and I do not think anyone should be surprised to see this play out on Hive.

The truth is that Hive is not a utopia; simply because someone was demonetized and silenced on web2 does not mean they will be welcome on Hive. The harsh reality is that these places are crowded, and regardless of the version of the web, anyone can be cruel to you, even if they do not truly silence you as they do on web2.

So does this make it a good thing? No

The idea is that no matter what version of the web you use, people will always be people, and as I have always stated, a "perfect Hive" will never exist simply because it is web3. You need to deal with it.

I have studied the behavior of a few orcas and whales over the years. Some of them care about Hive in their own unique way, and they have ways to express this. I recently began researching these guys' perspectives on DHF funding and how it creates debt for Hive, and one of their points stood out to me.

He is a whale who openly criticizes how the DHF and the valueplan thingy have been going. Why not? He stands to benefit from Hive's success and wants all of the bleeding to stop, but he refuses to take action; of course, I believe he does not want it to appear that he is doing anything because he is a "whale".

There is this animosity toward whales.

People call them names and use phrases like "because he is a whale". In reality, not all Hive whales behave similarly. Some people may do whatever they want without explaining why; they argue that it is their constitutional right to do so, which is correct.

However, we expect people to be human before being labeled as "Orca" or "whales," but this is simply an expectation.

In reality, I believe that with more power comes greater temptation, and that some people are more susceptible to temptations than others.

Reactory Tendencies

For example, as the price of Hive rises, many people will give in to their instincts, greed, and cravings, which is normal. This instinctive tendency is reactory, and it will become apparent when the hive begins to truly moon.

People will begin to question who deserves who, and some will take it upon themselves to find out who earns what and whether they are truly deserving.

The bull run is always contentious on Hive; flag wars, jealousy, greed, betrayal, and a variety of other behaviors, all of which I believe are caused by rising prices.

An OCD vote that would normally cost $20 at 100% could cost up to $500 or $600. @appreciator, for example, could rise from 20 to 30 dollars at 100 to 900 dollars if the price of Hive rises by more than 3 dollars, and people will begin to engage in questionable behavior in order to catch the golden candle

When there appears to be a lot to gain, temptation is inevitable. People react instinctively when there is a lot to gain, so expect to see all of that emotion play out.

That's a lot of dollar-worth of Hive to distribute. I agree with you, the higher Hive goes the more emotional people will become and react instead of being logical.

In the context of this post, I am wondering, could people handle Hive at 20$, 50$, or 100$ and the rewards that would mean? Probably not. I think either tokenomics/distribution would need to change or the user base would need to grow exponentially to see Hive price at those levels without people going crazy over them.

In 8 to 12 years. These prices you mentioned would be a reality, and I can't even begin to imagine the issues it would create. I witnessed OCD giving away 600$ worth of upvote in 2021, so it can be wild. DVs were flying.

I constantly got over 100$ worth of downvotes for many months and it was chaotic back then.

I think we're in line to experience another greed, hate, jealousy and all that on the chain in 2025 when Hive begins to do insane numbers

I agree that sometimes DV can be personal rather than because the DV receiver transgressed. And there's no apparent way to control how DV are distributed on the platform. It therefore behoves whales and orcas on hive to right these wrongs when they see them. For instance, if I were a whale and I see an underserved DV I could counter it with my own UV. Still, it won't eradicate the issue completely. Like you said, these issues complicate when the price of Hive appreciates. The DV on a milestone post is just crazy to me.

50% of the time, it can be personal. There was this project where the handler was obsessed with downvoting people and I think it caused a lot of problems during the last bull cycle. I think if this person was still in charge of that project, you'll have been seeing a lot of downvotes by now. Apart from this project, some of the DV I've seen are not outrageous. In the past, people countered DVs but because it's not as incessant as it used to be, we don't see those counter votes anymore.

Things can get very ugly when people start to get really greedy... You've seen that before here on Hive, I wasn't around when Hive was at all time highs. This could get interesting if we ever make it back up that high for sure. To be honest I'm happy to see things in the $0.30's as opposed to the teens!

Yeah, I was around and saw everything; people fighting, screaming cursing, doing all sorts of stuffs. These things will begin to suffice when the market begins to push towards a dollar and above.

I'm also happy we're no longer in teens, but it's disappointing to see BTC halting our momentum. I take solace in the fact that the run doesn't officially start till January

Just over the $100,500 mark at the moment on BTC, hopefully it stays above that $100K level...

I'm surprised at the rebound to 100k for BTC, I hope the alts will quickly follow suit.

As I talk in one of my songs, power is like a virus that corrupts people's mind. And once you get it, it's too late.

I'd like to think that being on Hive when its value is low should teach people how to value their votes too. I mean, if now I post a video of me playing and get 100 Hive in payout it's ok. But what if I post the same video when Hive goes higher than 1$, the power of people grows and suddenly I get 500 Hive in payout? I think I will feel a bit upset, because it's not fair for a post to have that much payout and that's because my experience is with Hive being around 0.20.
