Titanic

My Reasons for the Nomination

This 1997 movie romance drama directed by James Cameron won Oscar for Best Picture. The story revolves around the 1912 maiden voyage of the cruise ship "Titanic". The sinking of this ship is an historical event in history. The ship itself when built was touted as "indestructible" when it set sail. Whether the error was in the ship's design or human error on the part of the captain or crew, is debatable.

More than two-thirds of its passengers perished when the ship hit an iceberg and sank.

The story is told from the viewpoint of one of the ship's passengers. The woman, named Rose Bukater, is now 100 years old and relives her survival when tells her granddaughter and individuals interested in locating famous necklace they believe was aboard the sunken ship.

The story involves two lovers aboard the vessel; Jack Dawson, a stow-away, played by Leonardo DiCaprio; the other, Rose Bukater, a socialite. Their struggle to survive after the ship struck the iceberg until it sank is carefully crafted into a believable version of events. The visual effects shown as the ship is sinking is stunning.

Both actors deliver stunning performances in this fictional version of how they survived. The remaining cast also delivers powerful performances with some familiar faces.

The cast includes:
Leonardo DiCaprio - Jack Dawson
Kate Winslet - Rose DeWitt Bukater
Billy Zane - Caledon Hockley
Kathy Bates - Molly Brown
Francis Fisher - Ruth DeWitt Bukater
Gloria Stuart - the Older version of Rose
Bill Paxton - Brock Lovett 1

Nomination Number Two

Casablanca

My Reasons for the Nomination

This blockbuster 1942 Oscar winning Best Picture classic is my favorite. I just love Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid in this film. Claude Rains also delivers a class performance. From the first time I saw the movie as a teenager, I was hooked. I watch it every time it airs from start to finish as though I don't know what's going to happen.

The setting is World War II. Rick Blain, played by Humphrey Bogart is an expatriate now living in Casablanca. He encounters the woman he loves again that he met in Parish, Ilsa Lund, played by Ingrid Bergman. The two had an affair in which they planned to leave Paris together. However, Ilsa never arrived at the train station, leaving Rick to go alone with his piano player, Sam. He never forgave her for not showing up.

The reason Ilsa didn't show and the back story is revealed once she and her husband, Victor Lazlo, played by Paul Henrich, arrives. He's a famous resistance leader. Rick is unaware of their arrival until he hears his and Ilsa's song *As Time Goes By," being played by Sam. See how it all unfolds as Ilsa tries to convince a jilted and now cynical Rick to help them get to America.

The cast includes:
Humphrey Bogart
Ingrid Bergman
Paul Henreid
Claude Rains
Conrad Veidt
Sydney Greenstreet 2

Nomination Number Three

12 Years A Slave

My Reasons for the Nomination

This 2013 poignant Oscar Winning movie, 12 Years A Slave is a biographical drama that was taken from a slave memoir. The movie is graphic and raw. It's also seen as controversial, as it tells the story of the denial of just basic human rights brought about by the history of slavery in America. The time is 1841 before the institution of slavery ended in the U.S. Fugitive Slave Laws are the at the core of this denial of freedom.

It's the story of a free African American man named Solomon Northrup, living in New York with his family. The actor who delivered this riveting performance is Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Solomon Northrup is an excellent violinist living the middle class life and is respected in his community. He takes a trip to Washington, D.C. He is kidnapped and labeled a runaway slave with another name. He's then sold in the Deep South. He endures the hardships and ugliness for 12 years that slavery forced upon African Americans during that time period in the Southern states.

He is eventually released when a Caucasian man finally tracks him down. His family never stopped praying he would return to them. This is a must-see film.

The cast includes:
Chiwetel Ejiofor / Brad Pitt
Michael Fassbender / Benedict Cumberbatch / Paul Giamatti / Paul Dano
Lupita Nyong'o / Bill Camp / Sarah Paulson 3

So many great choices! This one has been a fun one to see which ones people choose out of such an extensive list. I really need to see Casablanca all the way through. I've caught bits and pieces but never the full film. Good luck in the contest!
