How to change your Hive Passwords using your Owner Key and Peakd.
STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
Hive is a Delegate Proof of Stake (DPOS) blockchain in which lives a large ecosystem of projects, applications, tools, games and communities that is constantly evolving and expanding.
When you create a Hive account you receive 5 passwords/keys that have utilities and different functions.
- Posting Key: is the key you will use most frequently and is used to post, comment and vote on a post on Hive and is also the key you will use most frequently to log in and perform major actions in front ends and applications, games and tools.
- Active Key: has additional permissions than the posting key and is needed to complete monetary operations such as transferring and exchanging tokens or transferring and exchanging NFTs.
- Owner Key: is the key that allows you to change all other passwords.
- Memo Key: is the key that allows you to encrypt and decrypt messages sent to and from your account.
- Master Password: starting with the Master Password you can derive all other passwords.
On Hive the management and security of passwords is completely up to the user who is solely responsible!
Yesterday @sissim72 contacted me on Telegram and asked for help to change her Hive passwords because she lost an agenda in which she had written her passwords and because she lost the Master Password but has the other private keys.
To help sissim72 but also all hivers who might need to change their hive private keys in this post I show how to change your Hive passwords:
- using your Owner Key
- and using the Keys & Permission section of Peakd
Step 1: Login to Peakd with Hive Keychain
- Step 1.1 you need to go to https://peakd.com/
- Step 1.2 then you have to click on Login
- Step 1.3 then you need to enter your Hive account name.
- Step 1.4 then you need to click on KEYCHAIN FOR HIVE
- Step 1.5 then you have to click on Confirm in the Hive Keychain window.
If you don't know or use Hive Keychain I recommend that you install it and start using it.
You can read the step-by-step guide that I wrote on March 25, 2024 in which I showed steps to follow to do the installation of Hive Keychain as a browser extension and to do the first setup.

Step 2: Go to the Key & Permission section of Peakd
- Step 2.1 you need to click on your Hive Account Name in the upper right hand corner on Peakd
- Step 2.2 then you need to click on My Blog.
- Step 2.3 then you need to click on ACCOUNT ACTIONS
- Step 2.4 then you have to click on Key & Permissions
Step 3: CHANGE PASSWORD
- Step 3.1 you have to click on CHANGE PASSWORD
- Step 3.2 then you have to put a check mark on the little square I have read and understood, let me change my password and keys.
- Step 3.3 then you must enter your Owner Private Key.
- Step 3.4 then you need to click on GENERATE NEW PASSWORD.
Step 4: Store and Update Keys
- Step 4.1 you need to click on DOWNLOAD KEYS to save your new Keys in a file.txt
- Step 4.2 then you need to put the check mark on the little square I have stored the account password and private keys in a safe place.
- Step 4.3 then you need to click on UPDATE KEYS.
Now you just need to update your new keys on Hive Keychain by clicking Replace.
I recommend that you store your passwords on at least two offline media:
- an offline digital media
- a paper support

Hive è una blockchain Delegate Proof of Stake (DPOS) nella quale vive un grande ecosistema di progetti, applicazioni, tools, giochi e comunità in continua evoluzione ed espansione.
Quando crei un Hive account ricevi 5 passwords/keys che hanno utilità e funzioni diverse.
- Posting Key: è la chiave che utilizzarai più di frequente e serve per postare, commentare e votare un post su Hive e è anche la chiave che utilizzerai più di frequente per fare il login e per eseguire le maggiori azioni nei front ends e nelle applicazioni, giochi e tools.
- Active Key: ha permessi aggiuntivi rispetto alla posting key ed è necessaria per completare le operazioni monetarie come il trasferimento e lo scambio di tokens o il trasferimento e lo scambio di NFT.
- Owner Key: è la chiave che ti permette di cambiare tutte le altre password.
- Memo Key: è la chiave che ti permette di crittografare e decrittografare i messaggi inviati da e verso il tuo account.
- Master Password: partendo dalla Master Password è possibile ricavare tutte le altre password.
Su Hive la gestione e la sicurezza delle password è affidata completamente all'utente che è l'unico responsabile!
Ieri @sissim72 mi ha contattato su Telegram e mi ha chiesto aiuto per cambiare le sue passwords perchè ha perso un agenda nella quale aveva scritto le sue passwords e perchè ha perso la Master Password ma ha le altre private keys.
Per aiutare sissim72 ma anche tutti gli hivers che potrebbero avere la necessita di cambiare le proprie hive private keys in questo post ti mostro come cambiare le tue Hive passwords:
- utilizzando la tua Owner Key
- e utilizzando la sezione Keys & Permission di Peakd
Passo 1: Login su Peakd con Hive Keychain
- Passo 1.1 devi andare su https://peakd.com/
- Passo 1.2 poi devi cliccare su Login
- Passo 1.3 poi devi inserire il tuo Hive account name
- Passo 1.4 poi devi cliccare su KEYCHAIN FOR HIVE
- Passo 1.5 poi devi cliccare su Confirm nella finestra di Hive Keychain
Se non conosci o non utilizzi Hive Keychain ti consiglio di installarlo e iniziare ad usarlo.
Puoi leggere la guida passo passo che ho scritto il 25 marzo 2024 in cui ho mostrato i passi da seguire per effettuare l'installazione di Hive Keychain come estensione del browser e per effettuare il primo setup.

Passo 2: Vai nella sezione Key & Permission di Peakd
- Passo 2.1 devi cliccare sul tuo Hive Account Name in alto a destra su Peakd
- Passo 2.2 poi devi cliccare su My Blog
- Passo 2.3 poi devi cliccare su ACCOUNT ACTIONS
- Passo 2.4 poi devi cliccare su Key & Permissions
Passo 3: CHANGE PASSWORD
- Passo 3.1 devi cliccare su CHANGE PASSWORD
- Passo 3.2 poi devi mettere la spunta sul quadratino I have read and understood, let me change my password and keys.
- Passo 3.3 poi devi inserire la tua Owner Private Key.
- Passo 3.4 poi devi cliccare su GENERATE NEW PASSWORD
Passo 4: Store and Update Keys
- Passo 4.1 devi cliccare su DOWNLOAD KEYS per salvare le tue nuove Keys in un file.txt
- Passo 4.2 poi devi mettere la spunta sul quadratino I have stored the account password and private keys in a safe place.
- Passo 4.3 poi devi cliccare su UPDATE KEYS
Adesso devi solo aggiornare le tue nuove keys su Hive Keychain cliccando su Replace.
Ti consiglio di memorizzare e conservare le tue passwords su almeno due supporti offline:
- un supporto digitale offline
- un supporto cartaceo

I expect a lot of people don't know this and their keys may have been compromised. It is actually pretty easy. Good backups are essential.
Great tutorial! Very important to keep your keys fresh and to occasionally change them... Especially after interacting with some unknown websites!
