La splendida vista sulla rigogliosa valle di Vitalba di cui si può godere dalle bifore del castello di Lagopesole basta ancora oggi a rendere Palese la storica centralità della fortificazione per il controllo del territorio alle pendici del Monte Vulture. essa sorge lungo il tracciato Romano della via herculea che Come riportato dal itinerarium tagliava trasversalmente la regione collegando Venusia al litorale Ionico, passando per grumentum. da questione circa la sua origine ed evoluzione costruttiva è da tempo oggetto di studio: indubitabile e centrale pare esser stato il periodo federiciano, dopo una fase normanna le cui preesistenze sono riscontrabili in diversi punti della apparecchiatura muraria e dell'impianto di fondazione. Una nuova ipotesi basata su dati di scavo vorrebbe invece più rilevante la fase Normanna durante la quale sarebbe stata realizzata gran parte della fortezza. il complesso a pianta rettangolare e si sviluppa su due cortili separati da una Cortina muraria interna. Se te le torri quadrati virgole di cui quattro angolari, una mediana e due Binate poste in corrispondenza dell'entrata principale punto un massiccio maschio di derivazione tipicamente Normanna Domina all'interno del cortile minore.

If you have square comma towers, four of which are angular, one median and two twin placed at the main entrance, point to a massive male of typically Norman derivation Domina inside the minor courtyard.
