Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.
A very powerful, profound phrase, which like almost all of Nietzsche's phrases seems carved in the stone of wisdom, so as to make you seem even more miserable than you see yourself looking at yourself in the mirror.
And yesterday morning I was looking for my why in a cup of coffee but I realized that sometimes the problem is not the great meaning of life but the small disaster always around the corner.
I'll tell you about my day yesterday. I had a meeting in person at the office but I didn't hear the waking alarm. There was a transport strike and the highway was a jungle of sheet metal so I arrived out of breath and 45 minutes late. Already in the throes of a crisis, I take a coffee pod from the desk drawer and approach our fantastic completely digital Nespresso machine and ... ta dan! I press the wrong button and the coffee comes out longer than my face.
What would Nietzsche have said to me at that moment? Perhaps he would have advised me to be brave and to face my fate or more likely he would have advised me to have a double espresso.
And just at that moment the phone rang, an unknown number but not marked as spam, at which point I answered.
I heard my son's voice a little strange, and I recorded three words: ball – finger – black.
At that point the coffee suddenly becomes an irrelevant problem and so does the meeting with the CEO – who will soon fire me.
I switch off the computer and face again but in the opposite direction the jungle of sheet metal of the highway and I arrive at school where I find the principal with a tray of pastries in her hand to avoid a complaint and my son with the face of a warrior and the hand as if he was returning from a battle.
So we went to the E.R. arming ourselves with patience and a lot of hunger. Only after seven hours between the waiting room, X-ray and orthopedic consultation we had the final result which was then what I feared: broken finger.
And while we were returning home, exhausted, I thought of Nietzsche: He who has a reason to live for can bear almost any how.
My “why” yesterday was clear: run, wait, sign forms, make jokes to lighten the mood.
In the end, life is not just great philosophical thoughts and bombastic phrases but a watered-down coffee, an unexpected phone call, an unscheduled run, a broken finger. And we, who try to make sense of ourselves in the midst of all this chaos.

He broke the finger on his right hand, poor thing, but he is left-handed. Monday he has to go to school.

Friedrich Nietzsche scriveva: Chi ha un perché per vivere può sopportare quasi ogni come.
Una frase molto potente, profonda, che come quasi tutte le frasi di Nietzsche sembra scolpita nella pietra della saggezza così da farti sembrare ancor più miserrimo di quanto tu ti veda rimirandoti allo specchio.
E io ieri mattina stavo cercando il mio perché in una tazzina di caffè ma ho capito che a volte il problema non è il grande significato della vita ma il piccolo disastro sempre dietro l'angolo.
Vi racconto la mia giornata di ieri. Avevo una riunione in presenza in ufficio ma non ho sentito la sveglia. C'era sciopero dei mezzi e il raccordo anulare era una giungla di lamiera, così sono arrivata trafelata con 45 minuti di ritardo. Già in preda ad una crisi esistenziale, prendo una cialda di caffè dal cassetto della scrivania e mi appropinquo alla nostra fantastica macchinetta Nespresso completamente digital e ... ta dan! Premo il pulsante sbagliato e il caffè viene fuori più lungo del mio muso.
Cosa mi avrebbe detto Nietzsche in quel momento? Forse mi avrebbe consigliato di affrontare coraggiosamente il mio ormai segnato destino oppure più probabilmente mi avrebbe consigliato un espresso doppio.
E proprio in quel momento il telefono ha squillato, un numero sconosciuto ma non segnalato come spam, al che rispondo.
Sento dall'altra parte la voce di mio figlio un po' agitato e registro tre parole: pallone – dito – nero.
A quel punto il caffè diventa improvvisamente un problema irrilevante e anche la riunione con l'amministratore delegato che a breve mi licenzierà.
Chiudo il computer e mi immergo di nuovo e in senso contrario nella giungla di lamiera del raccordo anulare e arrivo a scuola dove trovo la preside con un vassoio di pasticcini in mano per scongiurare una denuncia e mio figlio con la faccia da guerriero e la mano da reduce di battaglia.
Quindi siamo andati al pronto soccorso armandoci di santa pazienza e molta fame. Solo dopo sette ore tra sala d’attesa, lastra e consulto ortopedico abbiamo avuto l'esito finale che poi è stato quello che temevo: dito rotto.
E mentre tornavamo a casa esausti ho pensato a Nietzsche: Chi ha un perché per vivere può sopportare quasi ogni come.
Il mio “perché” ieri è stato chiaro: correre, aspettare, firmare moduli, fare battute per sdrammatizzare.
Alla fine poi la vita non è solo grandi pensieri filosofici i e frasi roboanti ma un caffè annacquato, una telefonata inaspettata, una corsa fuori programma, un dito rotto. E noi che cerchiamo di dare un senso a noi stessi in mezzo a tutto questo caos.

Si è rotto il dito della mano destra poverino, ma lui è mancino. Lunedì tutti a scuola! Su questo sì che ci sarebbe da meditare!

What a day... The broken finger sure took precedence quickly didn't it? Whenever one of our children are hurt everything else loses it's importance very fast. Just one of the joys of being a parent!
I hope you didn't lose your job though, that would make things a lot more interesting in a bad way.
I find now that my son is grown keeping the why to live is sometimes more of a challenge. I've had to redefine my priorities and goals in life. I had never heard that quote before, but it's very true!
I am in a 'difficult' moment of my life and I have been quite 'absent' and 'absent minded' at work during the last 15 months, that is why I guess one day my boss will say he does not need a person with so many personal problems.
The sentence comes from the book 'Thus spoke Zarathustra' (I am italian and this is the literal translation of the title).
I read the book when I was young and I am reading once again now because I felt the need. I think that parenting is the most difficult job you can ever face in life. But in this moment my son and my daughter are really my 'why' and my 'how'.

I'm sorry to hear about the problems, I've been there and understand it all too well. Our children really are our why and how in life, even when they are grown. My son is in college now and adjusting to an empty house has been a challenge this year for me.
I don't think I've ever read that particular book, maybe I should find a copy in English, my Italian is pretty rusty...
Innanzitutto un pensiero a tuo figlio ed al suo dito rotto, poi un pensiero al sorriso che sei riuscita a farmi fare leggendo. Affrontare le disavventure quotidiane (come scrivi tu, sì, la vita non è fatta solo di grandi pensieri filosofici, ma soprattutto di tutto il nostro quotidiano) con il giusto spirito è il vero toccasana. Io ieri, dopo una giornata in cui tutto sembrava andare nel verso sbagliato, ho optato per concedermi un orzo "speciale" (nel senso che la signorina della caffetteria mi ha detto anche il nome della qualità che assolutamente ho dimenticato dopo due secondi, da dove veniva e la tazzina era pure stile zen ^_^). Per ben cinque minuti mi son sentita quella che i suoi "perché" li aveva trovati, poi son tornata all'aggrovigliamento della mia giornata, ma un pizzico più "leggera". 😁

Ho fatto pure un po' di caos a pubblicare il post perché volevo mettere una foto della mano di mio figlio ma dopo suppliche varie e rincorse non sono riuscita ad averne una. Poi ne avevo scelta un'altra da pixabay ma non è uscita. Allora l'ho cambiata ma si vede sempre l'altra. Nel frattempo sono partiti i voti ma temo non siano stati registrati. Insomma, la prendo con ... filosofia! Mi hai fatto sorridere anche tu 😊 Viva la tazzina zen. Magari pure un George Clooney che, ammiccante, porgendola ci dice what else. E cosa vuoi di più dalla vita?

La cosa bella di tutto questo caos è cercare di metterci un ordine e arrivare a fine giornata :)
Forse è proprio questo caos e la capacità che abbiamo di cercare di risolvere i vari problemi quotidiani a rendere la vita così bella e la bellezza principale per quanto mi riguarda sta nel sorriso di mia figlia e il fatto che sei corsa da lui mostra che sei una brava mamma e nel caos attuale non è una cosa scontata...

Non ho capito molto il passaggio del vassoio di pasticcini della preside e del dito rotto, in ogni caso concordo con te sul fatto che spesso ci incazziamo su autentiche stronzate e quando arrivano problemi di una certa entità tutto diventa piccolo al confronto, in bocca al lupo e tuo figlio...

Io ho finito i crediti ormai, fra mio fratello, mia madre e i miei figli, se lavoro 3 giorni a settimana è grasso che cola. Poi è pure cambiata la dirigenza. Non ci sto facendo una buona figura.
Regole che ti permettono di lavorare solo 3 giorni a settimana? Nel mio paese è tranquillamente fattibile, ma in Italia è dura. Finito i crediti? Che crediti? Però se i tuoi familiari hanno bisogno di caregiver, se non vado errata, l'azienda ha l'obbligo di venirti incontro. O no?
Sulla carta è tutto perfetto. Prendi pure ferie, permessi etc. Poi però fai presto a finire dentro una bella ristrutturazione aziendale. Con la frase 'ho finito i crediti' intendo dire che io di ferie, permessi etc ne ho presi un bel po'. Ho sempre avuto problemi in questi ultimi 15 mesi. E se all'inizio chiudono un occhio, poi si cominciano a stancare. Al profitto frega poco se sei un caregiver.
Proprio un mondo di cacca. Tra l'altro, marciume alimentato dall'infame sistema di tassazione italiota che penalizza il datore di lavoro ogni due per tre tanto da rendergli impossibile lo stare sul mercato se i suoi impiegati si ritrovano sommersi da familiari ammalati. Le solite infami leggi ideologiche che stanno bene quando c'è di mezzo il diritto penale, ma sul civile e giuslavorista assolutamente no perchè producono gli effetti inversi a quelli che dovrebbero raggiungere.
