Nothing to do about it: even though we were taught at school that the age of speed was that of futurism, the 20s after the end of the First World War, I believe that the age of speed is precisely ours. Indeed, ours has perhaps gone beyond and is the age of acceleration.
We can no longer keep up with ourselves: notifications on our cell phones run faster than our thoughts, decisions are made instantly, artificial intelligence grows exponentially and insinuates itself into every area and waiting has become a luxury that no one can afford.
But there she is, as soon as the rain comes, regardless of the frenzy of the human being, peeking out from between the damp soil and the wet leaves, the snail.
She moves conquering millimeter after millimeter with a grace that seems like the awareness of someone who knows she is in no hurry.
She was there, in the condominium garden, nibbling on our beloved leaves and with the look of a bored diva she stretched out her antennae, looked at me with her little eyes and posed, calm, to have a few photographs taken. Myself, without any makeup on and in a hurry, stopped.
Nietzsche wrote Everything that is perfect ripens slowly.
Yet, in our world, slowness is viewed with suspicion, almost as if it were a defect to be corrected. If you don't respond immediately to a message, you are absent-minded; if you don't produce enough at work, you are inefficient; if you walk slowly, you are annoying.
But Seneca also wrote It's not true that we have little time: the truth is that we waste a lot of it.
So, what would happen if we took the snail as an example? If we tried, even just for one day to slow down? To walk without a precise destination, to enjoy a sunset without necessarily having to photograph it or maybe to spend 15 minutes trying to get some not blurry shots of a snail?
Maybe we would discover as Italo Calvino said, that Taking life lightly is not superficiality, but gliding over things from above.
And in my opinion the snail has figured it out: she does not have to pay the mortgage, she always carries the house with her and above all she has refused to use Outlook and does not continuously receive emails with the subject !!!URGENT.
Maybe she really is the philosophy to be listened to in this 21st century.
But you should have to study her language, slowly, obviously…

Non c’è niente da fare. Anche se a scuola ci hanno insegnato che l’era della velocità è stata quella del futurismo, gli anni 20 dopo la fine della prima guerra mondiale, credo che l’era della velocità sia proprio la nostra. Anzi, la nostra forse è andata oltre ed è l’era dell’accelerazione.
Non riusciamo più a stare al passo nemmeno con noi stessi: le notifiche sul cellulare corrono più veloci del pensiero, le decisioni si prendono in un istante, l’intelligenza artificiale cresce in modo esponenziale e si insinua in ogni ambito e l’attesa è diventata un lusso che nessuno si può permettere.
Ma eccola lì, appena arriva la pioggia, non curante della frenesia dell’essere umano, eccola che fa capolino tra il terreno umido e le foglie bagnate, la lumaca (o per meglio dire la chiocciola).
Si muove conquistando millimetro dopo millimetro con una grazia che sembra quasi la consapevolezza di chi sa che non ha fretta alcuna.
Lei era lì, nel giardino condominiale, a mangiucchiare le amate foglie della portiera e con fare da diva annoiata ha allungato le antenne, mi ha guardato con i suoi piccoli occhi e si è messa in posa, tranquilla, per farsi fare un po’ di scatti fotografici. Io, struccata e di corsa, mi sono fermata.
Nietzsche scriveva Tutto ciò che è perfetto matura lentamente.
Eppure, nel nostro mondo, la lentezza è vista con sospetto, quasi fosse un difetto da correggere. Se non rispondi subito a un messaggio sei distratto, se non produci abbastanza sul posto di lavoro, sei inefficiente, se cammini piano dai quasi fastidio.
Ma anche Seneca scriveva Non è vero che abbiamo poco tempo: la verità è che ne sprechiamo molto.
E allora, cosa succederebbe se prendessimo esempio dalla lumaca? Se provassimo anche solo per un giorno a rallentare? A passeggiare senza una meta precisa, a godere di un tramonto senza doverlo per forza fotografare o magari a passare 15 minuti a cercare di avere degli scatti non mossi proprio di una lumaca?
Forse scopriremmo come diceva Italo Calvino, che Prendere la vita con leggerezza non è superficialità, ma planare sulle cose dall’alto.
E poi secondo me la lumaca ha capito tutto: non deve pagare il mutuo, si porta sempre la casa dietro e soprattutto si è rifiutata di utilizzare outlook e non riceve in continuazione mail con oggetto !!!URGENTE.
Forse lei è davvero la filosofa che dovremmo ascoltare in questo 21mo secolo.
Ma dovremmo imparare la sua lingua, lentamente, ovvio...

Davvero carino il mio percorso filosofico, ricco di considerazioni che sarebbero da prendere seriamente come monito da seguire, la vita odierna viaggia molto veloce, a volte mi sembra di cercare di salire su un treno che corre e provo disperatamente a salire al volo sull'ultimo vagone, confidando in un eventuale rallentamento del convoglio, perché altrimenti si rischia di rimanere a piedi, di rimanere indietro, e ancora non possiamo permettercelo...

Bellissimo post! Hai ragione. Anch'io sono preso dalla frenesia, non è facile fermarsi, ma ci provo. Accendo il caminetto, ricerco le cose antiche, cammino in un bosco, e la lentezza entra nell'anima. Aggiungo alla frase di Nietzsche che tutto ciò matura lentamente è perfetto.
