Enjoy every battle, beyond winning and losing!
At first, seeing so many cards, their stats, abilities, rule sets, etc. all at once can seem very confusing and difficult, so I would suggest that instead of getting scared of looking at the whole book, just look at the one page you are on and enjoy it. Which means that you should enjoy every battle as much as possible and even if you lose, pay attention to which card performed very well and which performed very badly, where did you went wrong and which of your decisions proved beneficial. Then based on those learnings, try to make some small improvements in the next battle and in this way slowly move forward while enjoying the game. You will see that in a short time you will start having good knowledge of the cards, their combinations and rule sets and your team selection will also improve significantly.
Rent, test, then buy!
You cannot constantly increase your rank with basic cards but still it is important that you play with the same cards in the beginning because it clears your basics about the game and you learn to use the stats and abilities properly to your advantage. But whenever you really feel that you cannot move forward in the game without better cards but at the same time you do not know which cards will really suit your battle strategy, then instead of buying a card directly, you should first practice by renting them from the market section and once you understand a card completely and test it in different conditions, then you should buy them. Like I did before buying Arkemis The Bear, Grum Flameblade and many such cards, I rented them and tested them in many battles, and when I was sure that these cards were perfect according to my in-game strategies and were also within my budget, then I bought them.
Use your Glint Rewards to win great cards!
For me, Glint rewards have proved to be very useful in improving the game. As you know, with every battle won, you get Glint rewards in addition to SPS and with increasing levels, the Glint reward you get per battle also keeps on increasing. For example, after playing in the Silver League recently, my end-of-season Glint reward alone was close to 8,000. Surprisingly, these rewards were part of the game from the beginning, but I came to know about their use only recently, and since then, I go to the Glint Shop every few days and buy different draws and have won my best cards to date.
These are some of the best advice I could give you to improve your in-game performance. Yes, this game is a bit challenging, but that is what makes it fun. When you start focusing on learning beyond winning and losing, this game will start to seem very exciting and fun.
