Hi friends.
In the spirit of romanticizing my life and absorbing the beauty in life’s little details, here is a plate of my kulikuli snack and beetroot smoothie.

Kulikuli is a Nigerian snack, indigenous to the northerners. It is made out of roasted groundnuts(peanuts) which are grounded and mixed with spices like chili, ginger, salt etc; and then molded into different shapes and sizes.

It is crunchy and quite rich on the taste buds. While some Kulikuli can be too dry, this one wasn’t. I imagine there weren’t victims of mass production because you can tell a lot of care went into it.

Eating this snack took me back to a childhood incident, one that made sure to leave a reminding scar on my feet. You see, as a child, whenever I attempted some cooking experiment, it always end with stories, often touching ones.

I remember returning from school one hot afternoon, and asking my mom for some money to buy groundnuts. She was curious to know why I wanted groundnuts and not the jollof rice she had just prepared.

A few moments later, she saw me pounding groundnuts in our small wooden mortar. She asked what I was up to and I told her my home economics teacher taught us how to make Kulikuli in school.

“Were you asked to practice this at home? Because I didn’t get any word from your teacher.”
“No”
“I can do this, mom. Look it’s so easy” I grabbed my textbook to show her the recipe.

I was eager and keen on following all instructions and steps. I imagined my friends at school enjoying my Kulikuli and singing my praises.
She left me to it, but not without a warning to be careful.

At the end of the day, it was a disaster. My Kulikuli looked nothing like the ones on the text. I dropped a chunk of it on my feet in an attempt to remove it from the pan, it burnt and hurt like hell. 😞
Instead of praises, my friends sang sorrys to me because I was limping at school the next day.

That incident made me lose all interests in eating said snack. I avoided it for many years because of the trauma I had created around it.
Here I am, many lives later, enjoying some sumptuous Kulikuli and I couldn’t help but laugh at the younger me. Had my attempt not been a disaster, there’s no way they would have tasted like this.

Anyways, the ingredients for my beetroot smoothie are:
Beetroot, carrots, apple, garlic, ginger, and celery leaves.
