Today we arrived in the fairy-tale-like German town of Monschau. Let’s explore together.

Monschau is a miniature German town located just 5 kilometers from the Belgian border. When you visit, you can immediately feel the spirit of the 17th century. The period during which the town developed and grew dates back to that time.

Our first activity was to take a walk through the Old Town. The Old Town itself is a major attraction: beautiful buildings, charming bridges over the Rur River, cozy terraces and narrow streets... You can explore all of these beauties in just a few hours.

The most characteristic feature of Monschau is its half-timbered (Fachwerk) houses. These houses are lined up along the river in the Old Town and are connected by elegant bridges that cross over the river. The view is enchanting.

Suddenly it started to rain, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the beauty. We quickly opened our umbrellas and continued our exploration.

The Red House (Rotes Haus): One of the most iconic symbols of Monschau, this building was once a center for the textile industry, the town's main source of income. Today, it serves as a museum where you can see its original grandeur. It is also one of the town's cultural hubs.

Another detail that shows how important textile dyeing was in Monschau is the bronze monument located near the Red House.

Monschau has several great viewpoints. We started our tour near a waterfall, took a small loop and then returned to the town center.

Monschau is a fantastic place, especially for those who enjoy combining city sightseeing with nature walks. If you’re staying for more than just a day like us, you’ll have the chance to explore many nearby hiking routes.

There is a viewing terrace just 10 minutes from the town center. The view of nature from here is incredible: the waterfall, fresh air, lush forests… Plus the whole town is at your feet.

From the viewing terrace you can also see Monschau Castle. Built in the 10th century, this castle has been attacked and destroyed many times and has been restored several times. During the summer, music festivals are held here.

After a tiring day, we decided to have coffee in one of the local cafes. These warm and cozy cafes invite you into a peaceful atmosphere.

Monschau is a fairy-tale place. A town that enchants tourists from all over the world and brings the atmosphere of old Germany to life.

In the afternoon the sun came out and the town became even more beautiful. So, we decided to climb up to the castle ruins and enjoy the view from there. I must say, I’m already in love with Monschau.

Although it attracts many tourists throughout the year, we visited in February, so it was quite calm. Also, since it was Monday, many shops and cafes were closed.

We came by car and paid only 7 euros for parking for the whole day. I’d love to come back in the summer to see it with flowers and greenery. Also, there’s a wonderful Christmas Market set up here in December.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Wishing you lots of colorful journeys.
