It is the first day of the Chinese New Year, the year of the Tiger.

Because of the latest COVID cases in Beijing, I choose not to go back to my hometown to celebrate the New Year, but rather stay in Beijing. Last night was the New Year's Eve, our family had a video conference via wechat, to exchange new year's wishes and greetings, and share delicious food. I made some spicy crabd and chicke stew, which was very delicious.

In the New Year's Eve, it is the Chinese tradition to watch the Nea Year Gala Party (春晚, Chunwan) hosted by CCTV. However, I did not watch it last night, because I was busy doing my stuff. I got a chance to take a walk when the work was done. The streets were not so busy. There was hardly a pedistriant in sight. Yes, most people were celebrating the festival with family at home, or watching TV. However, I enjoyed the time walking alone outside, despite the cold temperature.

I did not see or hear any fireworks or firecrackers outside, because they have been banned in the city for two years, to improve the air condition. I support this policy of the government, but think there should be some places where people can enjoy the fireworks, beacause they are so beautiful and are part of the Chinese tradition. The atmosphere of the Spring Festival has changed over time, but the seven days off work/study is a relief and relaxation for may of us.

The Year of the Tiger has finally arrived, and the past is so past. Wish everybody here, who celebrate it or not, a happy, wealthy, and prosperous new year. Let's roar like the tiger.

I've never understood how people can sit around a TV and watch the New Year Gala party for hours and hours. Usually, the new year segment on TV in the west is about 2 hours, 1 hour either side of midnight. We also don't have quite as many celebrities.

I understand that there are few people in Beijing who are native Beijing'ers and in normal circumstances, Beijing becomes quite an empty city during the New Year as everyone returns to their home city. I suspect it's quite different this year, and perhaps for the first time.

Happy new year!

When I was young, I used to watch the. New year in ghana from beginning to end. Now that I have grown up, I don't Watch them anymore because they are boring to me. I think the reason that people watched them in the past is because they had no Other kinds of entertainment. They spent much time in front of the tv, like we do now with the mobile phones. Also is a chance for the family members to get together and talk about the show. Anyway, I think most of the performances are very boring, and I don't like the entertainers. I haven't watched it for many, many years. The hours are better spent doing something more meaningful.

happy new year✌️✌️
