As every year, in December we celebrate -in the beautiful town of Sanare- a party full of color, tradition, parrandas and lots of joy. For the popular tradition it is a day of crazy and crazy acts.
Sanare is a beautiful town in the State of Lara in Venezuela. There we celebrate annually the feast of Los Zaragozas. This beautiful tradition combines devotion with the joy of popular and folkloric traditions.
But, where does this tradition come from? The origins of the festival of Los Zaragozas go back a long time. It is said that the festival has roots in ancient indigenous celebrations, which eventually merged with the popular and religious commemoration known as “El Día de los Santos Inocentes” (The Day of the Holy Innocents).
The beautiful costumes you see in the photos represent the attire of Los Zaragozas, characters dressed in colorful costumes and extravagant masks that symbolize the madness and chaos that, according to tradition, reigned during the slaughter of the Holy Innocents. They walk the streets of Sanare to the sound of popular songs interpreted by the best musicians of the region; filling it with life and joy to all the people who attend this festivity.

¡Sanare se Desborda de Alegría con la Fiesta de los Zaragozas!
Como todos los años, en diciembre celebramos -en la hermosa población de Sanare- una fiesta llena de colorido, tradición, parrandas y mucha alegría. Para la tradición popular es un día de locos y actos disparatados.
Sanare es un hermoso pueblo del Estado Lara en Venezuela. Allí celebramos anualmente la fiesta de Los Zaragozas. Esta hermosa tradición combina la devoción con la alegría de las tradiciones populares y folklóricas.
Pero, ¿de dónde viene esta tradición? Los orígenes de la fiesta de Los Zaragozas se remontan a mucho tiempo atrás. Se dice que la fiesta tiene raíces en antiguas celebraciones indígenas, que con el tiempo se fusionaron con la conmemoración popular y religiosa conocida como “El Día de los Santos Inocentes”.
Los hermosos disfraces que ven en las fotos representan el atuendo de Los Zaragozas, personajes disfrazados con trajes coloridos y máscaras extravagantes que simbolizan la locura y el caos que, según la tradición, reinaron durante la matanza de los Santos Inocentes. Ellos recorren las calles de Sanare al son de canciones populares interpretadas por los mejores músicos de la región; llenándolo de vida y alegría a todas las personas que asisten a esta festividad.
