The border between the Americas runs along the Isthmus of Panama. In the place where the Pacific Ocean meets the Panama Canal, the Bridge of the Americas was built 60 years ago. Here you are in North America. And I walked 1200 meters along the bridge - and already in the South. Of course, my frostbitten friend and I decided to go through it. One problem: some time ago, the bridge ceased to be pedestrian (although, having passed it, we made sure that the sidewalk on one side is still preserved). The first review on Google maps says that a group of tourists tried to cross the bridge on foot, but they were picked up by the police and taken to the hotel. But, as I said, my comrade is frostbitten, so we decided to take a chance.
We started from the observation deck Mirador de las Américas, where an obelisk was erected in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Chinese presence in Panama. We went carefully along the left side of the bridge. It can be seen that people have not been walking here for a long time, but the sidewalk remained in place, albeit without a fence. A lot of drivers honked us: hardly as a sign of support. The traffic on the bridge is fast and heavy. I can’t imagine how the police would film us in such traffic: it’s safer to let pedestrians slowly walk. There was a fear that on the other side we would run into a dead end, but no, we walked an extra 500 meters and hobbled to the place where we could call the car. The entire transition took 15 minutes.
Conclusion: in vain the local authorities abandoned the pedestrian infrastructure of the bridge. Many tourists would be interested in walking between the Americas.
