Very nice religious gates adorn a lot of the beach entrances in Bali

The ocean is vast, the beaches are vast. They're great for paddling but you should stay close to shore if you don't know the waters here ...

AKA these waves WILL KILL if you aren't careful, see below. I was caught in a rip and almost couldn't get back in to the shallows until a friendly sea-demon rescued me. Close one. Then there was the quake ...

This Singaporean-Indonesian fusion cafe or 'warung' was almost daily for me, until i made friends with the owners. Every day a different dish.

This was the chicken rice. Very yummy. It's called 'Warung Alamak' in the Kerobokan area https://g.page/warung-alamak?share

Another interesting restaurant, purely for the decor.

Balinese restaurants can be beautiful places to enjoy an evening ... with decorations to keep you amused and amazed for hours.

In another multi-parter as far too many to feature in one post. My trip to Bali, the most famous and renowned island of the Indonesian archipelago. This trip was for personal/family reasons excluded here, yet afforded me a fair bit of time to explore the island, and try to get away from an insane amount of tourism that was evident at the time - pre-pandemic obviously. Bali was a great contrast to Thailand and although I loved it, there were many reasons in particular over-crowding, population density, waste issues, terrifying traffic, petty crime, corrupt traffic cops, shanty towns et al that even many of these issues still exist there, make Thailand feel all the more civilized and livable than it already did to me. I'll leave it at that, yet I still crave to return to Bali. There was a lot of cool stuff to do .. and buy - some of it very premium, many parts very affordable, humble, friendly and welcoming. The island was far more vast than I realized, to go the further parts you want to stop overnight. There are volcanoes you can see which could blow anytime.

Bali has a lot to offer. But boy is it f*cking terrifying. Here's a list of my short 3 weeks:

  • Caught in a riptide, almost drowned, sucked out 400 meters by 12ft swell and rescued by a huge Swedish dude who was tattoed like a sea monster
  • Shaken down for 'parking fee' by aggro mafia 200k
  • Shaken down by traffic police with valid international license 'not bali' or go station: 1million
  • Rudely awakened by a magnitude 6.1 quake .. yes, a FRICKIN EARTHQUAKE ... yeah that wasn't scary at all!!!

Still want to go back. Just watch for the pitfalls, and have a quake plan ... or, if it's your day it's your day i guess?
