Are you one of those who believe that pineapples are born on trees or those who consider that they need the soil for their development? If you are one of the latter, you are right.

Pineapples are not like apples that fall from a tree. They are a tropical fruit that is born and grows on dry land on plants native to South America. Pineapple – or Ananas comosus – is a perennial plant that accepts any variety of soil, if it has an irrigation system.

Pineapple is a fruit that can be planted at any time of the year, although the best season is autumn. They are harvested in well-known pineapple farms. For its development, the scions are planted side by side in a line leaving up to 18 inches, which increases between rows.

n the case of industrial plantations, they will be tighter, up to 80,000 plants. To regulate the productive period, these fruits must be renewed every two harvest cycles to avoid a decrease in yield. This is a non-climacteric fruit, it must be harvested when ripe, because once cut, ripening stops completely and begins to deteriorate.

The pineapple grows from the top of the central stem through leaves that rotate around it. These leaves, in healthy fruits, can grow up to one and a half meters (4.95 feet) long.

For its reproduction, the seeds are not used, but the shoots of the central stem, specifically the basal part of the stem (area below an organ), although the buds of the stem or the crown of the fruit can also be used. Commercial pineapple varieties are “self-incompatible” meaning that their pollen is not used to pollinate the same species.

In addition, the plant’s “shoots” and slips (small seedlings growing at the base of the fruit) can produce new plants when replanted.
