He's an interesting case. He was good for Libya, and used his money, resources and connections to do a lot of good around Africa. But the West hated him because he was aligned with the USSR, even though he really wanted to be neutral - but he needed their protection.

I think he made two mistakes. The first was falling out with Idriss Deby and underestimating his military genius, and the second was giving up his WMD program in the hope he could buy his way into the Western club. Kim Jong-Il and the Iranian leadership have most definitely learned that second lesson, so the West effectively shot itself in the foot.
