Hello all Hivians and good people of the Gems community. Let me take us round the globe to have a look at some historical events that took place this day. Today will feature prominently on politics. Let's go people.
We begin today from Poland. [The election of President Lech Wałęsa]. On this day in 1990, Lech Wałęsa was elected President of Poland in the country's first direct presidential election. It will be recalled that Lech Wałęsa had led the first Polish trade union - solidarity and also a recipient of the Nobel prize for peace in 1983.
From Poland, we move over to Australia [ the birthday of Robert Hawke]. Do you also know that on this day in 1923, Robert Hawke, the Prime Minister of Australia from 1983 to 1991 was born in Bordertown, South Australia, Australia. Happy posthumous birthday to him.
From Australia, we move over to South Korea. [the impeachment of President Park Geun-Hye]. Now, on this day in 2016, Park Geun-Hye, the South Korean President was impeached by the National Assembly over allegations of corruption. She however left office the following year after the country's constitutional court upheld her impeachment by the parliament. Park Geun-Hye's tenure as President lasted from 2013 to 2017. She will always be remembered as the first female President of South Korea. Such a history!
From South Korea, we move over to Serbia [the reelection of Slobodan Milošević]. Do you know that on this day in 1990, Slobodan Milošević was reelected President of Serbia.
Gentlemen, we'll round off our today's look in history from Tanganyika [the independence of Tanganyika]. Do you know that on this day in 1961, Tanganyika now Tanzania gained her independent with Julius Nyerere becoming its first Prime Minister.
