As I come to the end of documenting my work from 2015 I found these three little projects which did not deserve their own posts so I lumped them all together here. They were one day carves and did what was needed at the time. They were commercial projects with very little creativity so I will not post to the Arts communities.
Everything needs documenting, as is my goal for my blog and although none of these are my proudest moments, Inside each could be a seed of an idea for future reference. So, without further ado may I present some other bits and pieces I made in that year.
Saint- gobain
I don't know much about this company or what they do. All I know is that they were having a shareholders meeting in an exclusive golf course and wanted an ice sculpture at the entrance. Not a hard piece to make once you have the right tools. They told me what they wanted, their logo in a block of ice . So that is what I did, nothing more and nothing less. The only thing I did off-piste was to round the corners to make it more interesting for myself. They were happy enough and paid me handsomely.
Naughty lunges
I had made these before for the guys from Jackass for the premiere of their movie Bad Grandpa here in Ireland. Someone had obviously seen them and asked me to play it again Sam. I can't remember the client now. Must have been some pervert.
These are luges. You pour your drink in at the top and it comes out nice and chilled through holes in naughty bits. I never got to see them being used which was a pity as I am sure they created lots of fun.
Stag
This was made for the re-opening of a hotel in the north of Ireland. They wanted a replica of a deer sculpture they had on bronze. I got some photos and reproduced it as best I could. The bronze had lost one of its antlers which I also copied but they weren't too happy I had left it out. ( why the hell didn't they tell me (I thought it was a symbol of something ( The one antlered Stag of the north))).
I'll put this one down as a fail. The joins in the ice I had to do looked ugly when compounded with the ugly stag. The long drive to the hotel was nerve-wracking as at every bump in the road I was worried that he would break, in the back of the van.
It also took me ages to get paid. The chef in the hotel who commissioned me to do it quite his job after the event and then the hotel said they didn't know anything about no ice sculpture, all evidence had melted away.
Finally, after legal threats, they paid up.
So there you go, now you know why I didn't make proper posts for each one. I have lots more sculptures to come in Sand, snow and ice. Next time I will be showing works from 2016. Bye for now!
I showed J the luges and when he finally stopped laughing he described them as "glorious" and said it was a pity that things like that wouldn't last here (they would melt too fast).
Ergh the stag job, I guess you now know to ask XD I can see why you were so unhappy with those join lines (is there a way to blend those or is it something that you just have to put up with when chunking things together?), the overall shape still worked out well though :)
The luges are fun to design and make. I just have never gotten to try them myself. I believe even in the heat of a nightclub they would last all evening. The male version needed to be enlarged just in case.
The Stag was probably my least favourite project to make. If I didn;t have to move it I would have been able to get it more delicate. The join lines are always a problem. I have experimented in many ways trying to make them less visible but because the ice crystal is cut there will always be a refracting surface. The best we to hide them in in a natural seam in and object but unfortunately Stags don't have one.
