Las glándulas salivales se encargan de la producción de la saliva dentro de nuestra cavidad bucal y de ayudar al sistema digestivo en el proceso de digestión.
Todas las glándulas salivales están formadas por un conducto secretor y un conducto excretor.
Las glándulas salivales se pueden clasificar según las células secretoras que las conformen, y estas pueden ser glándulas serosas, glándulas mucosas o ambas, las cuales tienen por nombre glándulas mixtas.
Además las glándulas salivales de acuerdo a su tamaño e importancia funcional pueden ser mayores o menores.
Las glándulas salivales mayores son tres, y se llaman glándulas sublinguales, glándulas parótidas y glándulas submaxilar.
Mientras qué, las glándulas salivales menores o también llamadas secundarias o accesorias, las cuales se encuentran distribuidas en diferentes partes de la cavidad bucal, tales como en la mucosa, y en las glándulas labiales, genianas y palatinas.
