Los dientes caninos o también denominados como colmillos son cuatro dientes, dos de ellos se encuentran en la parte superior mientras que los otros dos se ubican en la parte inferior.
Estos dientes se caracterizan por ser puntiagudos, pues su función es la de desgarrar los alimentos al momento de masticar, además poseen una sola raíz.
Los dientes caninos o colmillos de encuentran ubicados al lado de los incisivos laterales.
Dentro de su desarrollo los dientes caninos de leche aparecen en la edad comprendida de 16 a 20 meses de edad luego del nacimiento, y por lo general se suelen desarrollar primero los dientes caninos superiores que los inferiores. Sin embargo al momento de aparecer los dientes permanentes la aparición de estos se invierte, es decir, primero aparecen los inferiores y luego los superiores.
Los dientes caninos superiores entran en erupción en la edad comprendida de 11 a 12 años, mientras que los dientes inferiores entran en erupción a los 9-10 años de edad.
