Currently we are having our Annual Budget being revealed in the Parliament and one critical feature that is always highly discussed about is the GST or the Goods and Service Tax aspect and just before the announcement of the budget we found this on the Internet.
There is a Paani Puri seller who apparently has earned 40 lakhs and received a GST notice from the government. This story claimed a Paani Puri vendor in Tamil Nadu got a GST notice after receiving 40 lakhs in online payments, But here's what really happened.
There was a fact check done by India Today which revealed it was actually a hotel vendor who had received the GST notice and someone had doctored the address part of the notice. According to GST rules, any business earning over 40 lakhs annually must register and pay taxes so you could expect how the Netizens and the Media reacted when they saw a Paani Puri vendor making 40 lacs per year.
What's fascinating is how this story went viral, People were shocked that a Paani Puri vendor could earn this much, with some comparing it to professors' salaries. It also exposes our bias towards street food vendors.
Maybe it's time we stopped looking down on small niche businesses and started seeing them for what they are which is a legitimate enterprises with real earning potential provided you do it right.
