Looks like it was probably some kind of GeoCaching thing. Usually they wouldn't bother to damage the tree like that though by driving a screw into it. Most people who do the whole caching thing are pretty in tune with nature and don't like that kind of vandalism. Next time you go there you should add your info to the list. Think of it as old fashioned blockchain where you have a record of everyone who has visited that spot in the past!

Oh, thought I knew it was something like that but I wasn't sure. I guess on the up side, it is screwed into the base of one of the palm leaf branches which die and fall off as the tree grows. I don't know much about palm tree health though, so I could be wrong.

Ah, that is good then. It sounds like they were probably more careful about it than I initially thought. Still pretty cool!
