MY SPORT LIFE
Growing up I have always loved sports and enjoyed watching sport activities. During my secondary school days I was always going home with a medal during our inter house sport, I would swim and play table tennis. I never played the basketball because the guys were always playing so I would just watch and wish I could put up some moves. I played football too with the girls but it was for fun, I wasn’t interested in acquiring more skills in it.
Since I already knew how to swim and we had a table tennis board at home I was so curious about basketball. During break in school I would rush down to the court to try and bounce the ball before the boys come to play, most times I try shooting but offcourse it wasn’t going go well except some days I had lucky shots. I watched my seniors play from primary five to jss three, in ss1 I walked up and said I wanted to play, they refused because I was the only girl on court. After so much pressure, they started teaching me the basics like traveling with the ball, three seconds in the paint and so on. In ss2 I had to change school for relocation purposes, sadly my new school had no court but had a rim, all I did was just shoot and hope it enters. I stopped in ss3 because I was given the head girl post so I always had most of my time spent with the students and I had waec, jamb and neco to prepare for.
In absence of basketball I started dancing for fun, I even joined one of kaffy dance crew then but my mum wasn’t in support so I had to opt out, eventually my crew performed at the headies and I was so sad because I wasn’t with them. I started teaching my juniors choreography for cultural day, graduation and many events that came up. I wasn’t slim but I was flexible so I could dance baale, in 2018 I broke my ankle while spinning during rehearsal, I didn’t know the floor was wet so I slipped. It was a very painful moment because I had dislocation, till date when I miss my step or train for long I feel the pain, when a close look is taken at my leg you will notice a shift.
In 100 level I started training and learning the basics of basketball and realized it was more than a game but actually an activity that relieves me of mental and emotional stress. My very first birthday in school I then decided to take pictures on the court.
Most times when I’m at home I just have this concept in my head and put it to screen. I’m not so good at the game yet Because it requires consistency. Time is not always mine as I have so many activities to keep up with such as academics, business and my social life. This pictures were taken during the period of lockdown, I was game starved and really wanted to play.
Finally the pandemic period was relaxed so schools re opened. This pictures were memories from the very first training after the lockdown with my friends.
On court I found peace, love, respect and unity.
