Last May, I visited one of the historical sites in Portland, Oregon known as the Pittock Mansion. Named after the wealthy Pittock family that owned the building, it now remains a cultural museum of artistic furniture that would have matched the décor and style of the era in which the family owned the mansion.

Entrance

A small welcome building on the way to the mansion acts as a resource for staff and gardeners of the vast property. Visits to the mansion have to be purchased and scheduled online to minimize contact with guests during the pandemic.

Interior

Photography was allowed in most areas, so long as photographers were not holding up other guests or blocking the view of others.

Here in the main hall, these grand marble stairs went up to a second floor and balcony area. The gorgeous windows look stunning from the outside and also provide a fantastic view of the front gardens and the pathway to the doors.

Entry Door

Although not currently used as the entry door for guests, it is still featured here. It has all the features of a city castle door with decorative metals bars. More for show than for everyday usage.

Library

Truly elaborate. This is the closest thing the being inside the Clue Mansion board game. Attention to the smallest details make all the difference in rooms like this that were frequently used for entertainment, conversation, and relaxation.

Music Room

Almost large enough to be a ballroom, the music room acts as a lounge area. It has the best view of the rose gardens as well as the scenic vista of the Willamette River with ships passing through Portland.

Tower Room

This small study room with an entrance to the outdoor balcony receives warmth from the morning light.

Most impressive for the dull round room is the contrasting ornate ceiling above.

Dinning Area

Kitchen

Original hardware and collectable tea sets stacked neatly in the cupboards.

And another sunny view down the mountainside.

The floor is a jigsaw puzzle of tiles.

Pantry

Staged with vintage era canned foods, this room alone could probably hold enough food to feed a family for months.

Servants Utilities

An old switchboard phone, alarm, and security system.

Nearby a separate stairwell exists for servants to remain unseen while delivering laundry and meals to various rooms.

The dumbwaiter has button controls. Food can be set on the elevator inside so that it arrives on the chosen floor. Truly a luxury.

Breakfast Room

What better room to adjust from a long slumber than to relax in this dark room with a soft view into the shade garden? It lets in a surprising amount of light and yet gives the sense of privacy. The décor almost blends in with the shade garden, as if you are hidden between the house and the plants outside.
