Sunday Stamps ~ Bison

Bison or Buffalo, what is the difference? Both animals look very similar, but the Bison have larger heads, humps and are just bigger overall. This particular 35 cent stamp was issued in 1981, and is part of the “endangered species” series. These large fellas were nearly killed off in the early 1900’s, due to hunting mainly. Next on the endangered list is the Cougar, featured on this 12 cent stamp issued in 1977. Sure wouldn’t want to run into one of these big cats, unless in a zoo. The Vancouver island Marmot 17 cent stamp is also part of the endangered species series. Also issued in 1981, and it does appear that this animal is struggling to get off that list.
The 8 cent Calgary stamp commemorates their centennial. Photo taken at the annual “Calgary Stampede”. Fun fact: the first Stampede took place in 1912, and has been going strong ever since. Everyone should go at least once in a lifetime! Thanks for stopping by.

I love the stamp days, very cool stuff. My favorite is the last one, the Calgary Stampede! All of them are gorgeous though. Was the cougar endangered in Canada at one point? I know their numbers in the Everglades are nearing extinction, but in the western US there are a lot of them. Fortunately, they don't people much, you don't want to have one of those attack you while hiking!

Yes they are part of the "endangered species" series (at least in the 70's when this stamp was issued). There was a fatal cougar attack in Banff some 20 years ago or so. Definitely not a common occurrence though.

The Cougar stamp is very beautiful. Bisons themselves might be endangered, I'm not sure, maybe because they're not native to African countries, but there are lots of buffaloes here

When I was researching these animals, it did mention that the buffalo is quite plentiful in Africa. How about Nigeria?

I'm not so sure we have any in Nigeria, places like South Africa and Madagascar have a lot of them though.

I love that stamp with those 4 big heads. And I love that mountain with them 4 big heads, where is that mountain again, Presidents on it

This collection is truly impressive! The bison stamps are not only visually captivating but also offer a glimpse into history and nature. Thank you for sharing this unique and educational piece. Looking forward to more posts like this!

The Bison stamp in particular I thought was quite pretty, and as you said "visually captivating". More to come next sunday. Thanks for checking it out.

Bison and Buffalo got almost exterminated with human expansion, I wonder if there still exist some savage ones... Cougar got his habitat destroyed, I don't think much has done to preserve that specie sadly

Sadly these great animals are in short supply. Hopefully they are able to make a real comeback, but I won't hold my breath. Thanks for dropping by.

Very cool! Stamps have so much personality to them well at least the older ones. random fact I ate Bison once and it was amazing lol

They ain’t worth much, but interesting to look at and read the story behind its issuance. Never tasted Bison myself...

Bisons are beasts that just leave you in awe...

Indeed, awesome and beautiful.

Thank you for sharing my brother, but I heard that another difference between them is their wildness,

Are bison ferocious, and are they dangerous to humans? 🤔🤔

Yeah, definitely wouldn't want to run into one in real life. Unless I was a safe distance away, for sure.

Those are all awesome stamps, especially the first! Wow!

We definitely do have some real cool stamps issued. Thanks for looking.
