So where does cryptocurrency lead us? What will the world of crypto look like in ten, twenty, hundred years? I can't say I know for sure, but let me try my best to paint you a picture…
I start this article with a scenario that I think is fairly realistic. In the future, our world will be filled with billions of devices that all need to be paid for. They will be so ubiquitous that we won't even notice them. I mean, we are already almost there, aren't we?
So imagine one day you wake up and go to the bathroom. As you walk, you pass by the smart bathroom mirror, which recognizes you, and says: "Good morning Chris, it's time to get dressed, you have 28 minutes to get ready before the bus leaves."
You brush your teeth, and as you do, you get a message from your smart toothbrush: "I'm running low on battery, do you want to order a new one?" Of course you do. And you do.
You're done brushing your teeth and you're ready to go, but you stop for a second and think: "What should I wear today? I don't know, let me ask my smart wardrobe." You do, and it recommends you a nice dark jeans and a red shirt. You put on your pants, you take a look at yourself in the mirror and you don't like the way they fit. So you ask your smart mirror: "What if I wear black pants instead?" And it replies: "Great choice, Chris!"
You get to the bus stop and you see your bus coming. You take out your wallet and you pay for your ticket with the money you got from selling your morning breath to the toothbrush company.
As you get on the bus, the bus verifies that your ticket is on the blockchain.
You get to your office, you turn on your computer. The computer asks you if you want to pay for your electricity today, and you say yes. It then says: "Great, you have just paid for 4 days of electricity, and you get the 5th day for free!"
You reply: "That's nice, but what about the electricity I used yesterday? I don't think I paid for it yet." The computer replies: "Don't worry about it, your smart clock has already paid for it."
You work for the rest of the day, and as you are about to leave, you realize that you need to get some groceries. You ask your watch to prepare a grocery list and to order a driverless taxi. "I did it 3 minutes ago, Chris".
As you pick up your groceries, your cloud assistant fires crypto transactions to pay for them. Bananas cost almost twice as much as yesterday, so you're happy you have some banana tokens to spare. You order your assistant to use them instead of plain coins.
You get home, and you take off your shoes and put them on the shoe smart charger. TV turns on and says: "Hello, Chris, how was your day?" You say: "It was good, I bought some groceries, but I don't feel like making dinner tonight" TV replies: "That's ok, I have ordered a pizza for you, it will be here in 15 minutes."
You sit down, put on your VR glasses, and start selecting your VR experience for tonight. You choose to go on a trip to Antarctica. You've just paid for it with the tokens you earned from selling your emotions to the VR company yesterday.
It's time to go to bed. You order your bed to go on sleep mode and select a dream that you think will be nice. As you doze off, a hazy ad for the latest Tesla pops up in your dreams, before fading away.
You wake up, and the alarm clock reminds you that you need to pay for your metaverse subscription again. You tell it to postpone it, it does so by issuing a debt token. It's ok, you'll eventually pay for it with the money you will earn from selling the data from your brain scan to the AI research company.
Ah, another great day in the future!
So what do you think? I mean, this is just one possible scenario, but I think it is fairly realistic, don't you?
