Hive
Social media is no more just a lifestyle for teens or youth, it has turned into civic life. So a social account is one of the major avenues to the online social world. But the mainstream social media are centralized. In such platforms, you may get censored. Simply put, a centralized social platform may not be able to facilitate your online activities.
Due to censorship, a section of the social media users is finding it difficult to recourse. The major problem with a centralized social platform is that no one can audit what the platforms are doing with your personal and/or networked information with other social users.
Therefore instead of a mediated private platform, a federated peer-to-peer interaction with open-source code technology is enabled to empower the users to recourse their social life in the online social world. That is what we call a decentralized censorship-resistant social platform. Blockchain technology is the backbone of such a platform.
The Steem network powered with blockchain technology was created as a decentralized social platform in the year 2016. Towards the end of the 4th year, it failed to continue with its promise of the decentralized social platform. The community resists, as a result, it undergoes a process of re-decentralization to create a new platform called Hive.
So Hive is a decentralized social platform which is a forked chain of Steem. Technologically it has the same fundamental properties as that of Steem Blockchain. But ideologically it is different than that of Steem. The community strived for its decentralized governance that was in danger at one point since 14th Feb 2020 and ultimately leads to the hardfork giving rise to the birth of Hive on 20th March 2020.
Unlike centralized platforms like Facebook, Twitter, the use-case of Hive is very nuanced. The social account itself is secured with cryptography. It has hierarchical keys to access the account and the keys are very specific to what and how you use Hive. For example, if you are just posting a blog or commenting, you need only posting key; if you are transferring the tokens then you need active keys. Similarly, the owner key can be used to change the keys of the account.
Hive is not a social media; rather it is the foundation upon which many types of social media can be created. So its an ecosystem of a social blogging platform. Social blogging is not a limited edition of blogging & vlogging only, it is way beyond that. It is an ecosystem that can inset every niche of social media.
How do you want to see Hive evolved into
Although decentralization brings additional responsibility to the individuals to take care of many things, Hive must formulate a plan to bring down the steep learning curve.
In the conscious layer of Hive Blockchain, it is decentralized with DPoS. But it is required to check from time to time whether the network is consolidating towards centralization? A provision for a sustainable decentralized effect of the network is essential.
The nuanced issue of centralization (whether by ideology, or by collaboration or by corrupt, greedy participants or by any malicious third party) must be checked and reassessed from time to time, otherwise it may undergo another cycle of re-decentralization.
The existing reputation algorithm is a flawed one and does not represent the true reputation of a user. It would be great if Hive can reset it to 25, as we are starting fresh and a new robust reputation algorithm should be put into effect.
Hive DAO
DAO is a self-governing decentralized autonomous body for the sustainable development of a community. Decision making is faster in DAO. A largely funded Hive DAO is capable & feasible both. Being a largely funded DAO, Hive can fulfill its development, marketing, branding, etc.
Steem always struggled for marketing despite being a high-performance blockchain, since Hive DAO has sufficient fund, aggressive marketing of Hive should be done to make the people feel its presence, we have a genuine high-performance product, so a part of the DAO fund can be utilized in its marketing.
In this way, Hive can get exposure to the outside social world. If we make this contest run every month, it will become a means of regular passive marketing. In the process of participating in the contest, the participants will get to know more about Hive and its community. It will also be an encouragement for the bloggers, writers from other platforms to join our ecosystem. If some of the influencers join, then automatically they will bring some of their followers to this platform and our ecosystem will expand.
What does Hive mean to you
What centralized social platform like Facebook, Twitter, etc. could not able to do for my social profile, Hive has been able to do more than that.
My Hive account is not just a social profile, it is way beyond that. It is a thriving economy for me.
- It is a social profile secured with cryptography.
- It is a wallet.
- It has economic opportunities.
- It has responsibility-decentralized governance.
- It commands integrity- community.
- It is readily available for activism without any fear of censorship.
- I am the absolute owner of my Hive account- no one else can access it.
- My access to Hive is not limited by just one site like Facebook/twitter—I can access through a number of dapps.
Hive is something where everyone wins.
