¡Es día de cosecha!

Una de las cosas que más disfruto es cocinar con productos frescos cosechados directamente en casa. A lo largo de los años hemos tenido diferentes cosechas en nuestro hogar, ahora me vienen a la mente berenjenas, cambures, auyamas, pepinos, cebollines, yuca, tomates y los que coseché hoy, unos ricos ajíes; pero estoy segura de que llegamos a cultivar alguna cosa más.

En la actualidad solo tenemos algunos árboles frutales, una planta de auyama y varias plantas de ají. Son ají de dos variedades diferentes y si les soy sincera yo no las sembré, pues cada vez que hacía los semilleros para ellos las plantas se secaban al poco tiempo o luego de trasplantadas se atrofiaban y nunca daban frutos.

It's harvest day!

One of the things I enjoy the most is cooking with fresh products harvested directly at home. Throughout the years we have had different crops in our home, now eggplants, bananas, pumpkins, cucumbers, chives, cassava, tomatoes and the ones I harvested today, some delicious chili peppers; but I'm sure we got to cultivate something else.

At present we only have a few fruit trees, an auyama plant and several chili pepper plants. They are chili peppers of two different varieties and if I'm honest I didn't plant them, because every time I made seedbeds for them the plants dried up shortly after transplanting or they atrophied and never bore fruit.

Ante la frustración de no lograr estas plantas, dejé de intentarlo. Cuando cocino tengo por costumbre echar todas las conchas y residuos vegetales al compost, pero a veces cuando es poquito, como unas cuantas semillas de ají, en vez de caminar todo el patio hasta el área del compost, simplemente las lanzo en la tierra sin vigilar donde caen. Fue así, sin proponermelo que nacieron estas plantas de ají.

Given the frustration of not achieving these plants, I stopped trying. When I cook, I have the habit of throwing all the shells and vegetable residues into the compost, but sometimes when it's a little bit, a few chili pepper seeds, instead of walking the whole patio to the compost area, I simply throw them on the ground without watching where they fall. It was like that, without meaning to, that these chili pepper plants were born.

Para cuando descubrí la primera plantita, esta ya tenía flores, estaba tan escondida entre otras plantas que no la noté, pero luego empecé a mirar más detenidamente y encontré otras. A partir de ese momento me dediqué a cuidar de ellas y a tratar de protegerlas de las plagas que ya empezaban a atacar a algunas de ellas.

By the time I discovered the first little plant, it already had flowers, it was so hidden among other plants that I didn't notice it, but then I started to look more carefully and found others. From that moment I dedicated myself to taking care of them and trying to protect them from the pests that were already beginning to attack some of them.

Al poco tiempo ya estaba saboreando los ricos ajíes que me ofrecen mis plantitas y que son el ingrediente perfecto para mis guisos. Por ejemplo, ayer los aproveché para guisar un pescado desmenuzado con el que después rellené unas arepas. Un par de ajíes, un poquito de ajo chino también de mi jardín y obtengo un delicioso condimento, saludable y libre de tóxicos y pesticidas.

In a short time I was already savoring the delicious chili peppers that my little plants offer me and they are the perfect ingredient for my stews. For example, yesterday I took advantage of them to cook a shredded fish with which I later filled some arepas. A couple of chili peppers, a little bit of Chinese garlic also from my garden, and I get a delicious, healthy seasoning that is free of toxins and pesticides.

Mi esposo me ha comentado que cuando las semillas no nacen es probable que sea porque son productos transgénicos, modificados en laboratorios, que las hacen estériles para que los productores tengan que comprar semillas nuevas cada año, aunque también puede ser simplemente un efecto secundario de la modificación para obtener cosechas más rápidas, más abundantes y con frutos más grandes. Que mis plantas hayan nacido por su cuenta me da a entender que era una semilla local, bastante orgánica. Lo que tiene bastante lógica porque los puestos de verduras cerca de la casa apoyan mucho a los pequeños productores locales, que obviamente no compran semillas especiales, sino que han sembrado su propia semilla durante mucho tiempo.

Me encantaría tener un huerto en el que pudiera cosechar todas las verduras que consumimos en casa, pero implica mucho trabajo y yo hay días en los que no tengo tanta energía y sufro los dolores de mi artrosis, así que por ahora me conformo con unas pocas cosas y si nacen por su cuenta mucho mejor. Trataré de guardar algunas de estas buenas semillas para mantener este cultivo el mayor tiempo posible.

My husband has told me that when the seeds do not grow, it is probably because they are transgenic products, modified in laboratories, which make them sterile so that producers have to buy new seeds every year, although it could also simply be a side effect of the modification to obtain faster, more abundant harvests and with larger fruits. The fact that my plants were born on his behalf makes me understand that it was a local seed, quite organic. Which is quite logical because the vegetable stalls close to the house are very supportive of small local producers, who obviously do not buy special seeds, but have sown their own seeds for a long time.

I would love to have a garden where I could grow all the vegetables we eat at home, but it involves a lot of work and there are days when I don't have so much energy and I suffer from osteoarthritis pain, so for now I'll settle for a few things and if they are born on their own much better. I will try to save some of these good seeds to keep this crop going as long as possible.
